Chinese Celebs lend Star Power to Charity Causes

Over the last few years more and more Chinese film and music stars have been using their fame to help the disadvantaged in China.  We've reported before about Jet Li's One Foundation,  which aims to help victims of natural disasters as well as support mental health services for youth in Mainland China.  Jackie Chan was also recently recruited to serve as chairman of the Foundation.

Chan regularly lends his name recognition to help other charities, including the Salvation Army and UNICEF, which only further augments his well known Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation which has been helping the youth and arts in Hong Kong and Mainland China for almost 20 years.

In addition to founding their own charities, many stars are hosting fundraiser events to help raise awareness and donations for various causes close to their hearts.  Faye Wong and her husband Li Yapeng started the Smile Angel Foundation,  a medical charity which employs a unique team of doctors formed to help children in rural china with cleft palates.  Inspired by the plight of their own daughter who was born with the condition, their team will start in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which is where Li Yapeng was born.  They were able to raise US$1.2 million through a celebrity auction last year,  which will help fund the 17 member medical team.  Their goal is to help 900 children per year.
