Guangdong removes barriers to HK films

In a move to ease import restrictions on films in China,  the Cultural Department of Guangdong Province has recieved the OK from the Chinese State Administration for Radio, Film and Television to allow Hong Kong films to be played in Guangdong movie theaters.  Currently there is a 20-film per year limit on non-Chinese produced films, most of which are dominated by large Hollywood Blockbusters.  Most larger budget Hong Kong films sidestep this quota by securing a Chinese co-production partner, but many smaller films currently do not.  This rule change is seen to benefit these smaller HK productions significantly.

Hong Kong and Guangdong province share the same regional language (Cantonese) and Guangdong's population of 83 million, which dwarf's Hong Kong's 7 million. Despite the lower disposible income in China and rampant piracy, many believe this rule change could double the box office of the smaller Hong Kong films.
