  After a string of successful exhibitions this year showing the works of Banksy, Takashi Murakami and Andy Warhol, Fabrik Contemporary Art — the city’s leading gallery specializing in edgy Western contemporary art — is proud to present a body of new works by Damien Hirst never been seen before in Hong Kong.

  
  

  The exhibition will include a series of six colour photogravure etchings of butterflies based on his previous works from his first solo show, “In & Out of Love” in 1991, and the “Superstition” show at the Gagosian Gallery in 2007.  Hirst has long been obsessed with butterflies as a metaphor for mortality.  Twelve years ago, when he was barely known outside the confines of an impoverished circle of artists in London’s East End, he filled a gallery with hundreds of live tropical butterflies, some of them spawned from chrysalises on monochrome canvasses hung from the wall.

  “In & Out of Love” is now seen as one of his seminal early works.  Along with his ‘Spot’ and  ‘Spin’ series, on show will also be an edition of the famous ’Diamond Skull’ — of which the original set a record for selling as the most expensive piece of art for a living artist.
  

   

  Damien Hirst’s wide-ranging creative forms – from installations to sculptures, paintings and drawings – has sought to challenge the boundaries between art, science and popular culture. His energy and inventiveness, and his consistently visceral, visually arresting work, has made him a leading artist of his generation. 


   

  Hirst explores the uncertainty at the core of human experience: love, life, death, loyalty and betrayal through unexpected and unconventional media. Best known for the ‘Natural History’ works, which present animals in vitrines suspended in formaldehyde such as the iconic ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ (1991) and ‘Mother and Child Divided’ (1993), his works recast fundamental questions concerning the meaning of life and the fragility of biological existence.  Hirst is equally renowned for his paintings. These include his ‘Butterfly Paintings’, tableaux of actual butterflies suspended in paint, or in ‘Amazing Revelations’ (2003), where he arranged thousands of butterfly wings in a mandala-like pattern.  His ‘Spin’ series is made with a machine that centrifugally disperses the paint steadily poured onto a shaped canvas surface, while his ‘Spot’ series have a rigorous grid of uniform-sized dots.

   

  About Damien Hirst

  Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol, UK.  He lives and works in London and Devon. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Into Me / Out of Me, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2006), In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Tate Britain, the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) and Century City, Tate Modern (2001). Solo exhibitions include Astrup Fearnley Museet fur Moderne Kunst, Oslo (2005), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2005) and Archaeological Museum, Naples (2004). He received the DAAD fellowship in Berlin in 1994 and the Turner Prize in 1995.  In August 2007, his diamond-encrusted skull, ‘For the Love of God,’ sold for £50 million.  In September 2008, Damien Hirst broke the sales record at a two-day sale at a Sotheby’s auction of works by a single artist, having raised US$198 million.
