    ‘’On the Wrong Side’ Trans-Eurasian Charity Expedition (OTWS)

    It has been an incredibly dramatic drive across Siberia into the Russian north-west, hemmed in by million of trees! 

    With the Hilux fixed in Novosibirsk, it was time to take a more adventurous route across Russia and avoid the main roads, lorries and the ever lurking traffic police.

    Racing through the Siberian taiga on October 8th to catch the last ferry sailing down the mighty River Ob got Charlie into the city of Surgut and onwards to Khanty-Mansisyk.
    From there it was a quick stop at the EuroAsia Border at Yekaterinburg and then cross country to Perm, Kirov, Vologda and Lake Onega.

    Besides camping next to missile defense systems and visiting numerous restored churches, Charlie had time to visit some pretty amazing attractions across the Siberian lowlands.
    One of the most memorable will forever be the former gulag, known as Perm-36.

    "What has been so evident is the sheer number of empty villages; there just seems to be no one living in them.  I guess most people have moved to the larger cities to find work and a more sociable lifestyle.  Some of these villages have wonderfully restored churches, others have been left to the harsh environment with old wooden houses collapsing under the winter snows".

    Snow has yet to fall, but as Charlie crosses into the Arctic Circle later this week, temperatures are forecast to plummet to -12C.
