What, one might ask, is a Phoebus Krumm?

Well, it's what i said i'd talk about last time - the book i've just finished work on.

Phoebus Krumm is a graphic novel, written by Prometheus Award winning author L. Neil Smith, with artwork by Scott Bieser and myself.
This book was actually a reunion tour for us. We previously worked together adapting El Neil's novel, The Probability Broach, to graphic novel form. On TPB, Scott was the line artist and i was colors. This time, the book is in black and white, so that wouldn't work so well, eh?
But we were working a bit different on this one. I was doing 3D modeling and render work for all the ships with their elaborate rigging, and various other sets. Scott was doing the primary story telling with the characters and base world. Call it 2/3 Scott, 1/3 me on the artwork. (We did.)

Phoebus Krumm is a space faring swashbuckler tale of high adventure on stellar sailing ships, with a wee bit of steam punk polish. I'm sure i'd get slapped by someone on the team for that description, but there's a very good reason i'm not in marketing. I don't do sum-ups. My basic proposals come with an index.

Phoebus Krumm is a 173 page graphic tale to be published by Big Head Press ... well, i think it may be at the printers now.  But it is still serializing online (for free), so i don't believe it will ship before next month. The serialization will complete 3 weeks from yesterday.
You  can go to the current page by clicking here, or use this link to go to the first page to read from the beginning.

The book is in black and white, but the sample pic i'm going to post here is derived from an unused shot of the Hannoverian flagship - Resplendent Quetzal  - from the recently completed cover. This shot is a bit closer in than the final shot, but i chose it to show why it was decided that 3D models was the way to go. Imagine trying to keep all these rigging lines, and the shadows they cast, working properly in your head while drawing freehand.  Add in the three levels of sails up out of camera shot and it's not hard to see the nightmare inherent in the work.

By the way, the big ugly things bolted on the side of the ship are not factory issue - the RQ is the only ship with them. For a sense of scale, it's about ten feet up from deck to deck on the outer rings. To this basic set render, Scott would add crewmen on the deck to give life to the scene.

In all, it was an enjoyable project, and i was able to do things i hadn't before. And, perhaps most importantly, it helped me shaped the art style i'm using for the new book i'm putting together.

After the last book, however, i'll not be credited on the cover as -3-. Instead it will be as That -3- Guy, though inside credit will remain normal.
Why is this? Because we estimate about 15% lost sales on La Muse from people who couldn't find books 1 & 2. Yes, my credit appears at the bottom of the cover, well away from the top, but it's still confusing to some, and my ego is plenty bloated enough to sustain itself when marketing needs have a viable reason to take preference like that. If this doesn't fix the problem, next time we'll credit me on the frelling back cover!

    Next time: His name.
