i'm sad about the pier getting torn down. And I can understand people who love HK wants to protect the pier.. but all those grafitti all over the pier as in the photos? I think it makes it worse. I think it makes the govt more determined to give it a new look huh, don't you agree?

Oops!  I placed my earlier comment in the wrong entry.  If I remember Queen's Pier correctly (haven't been back to HK after 97), it is the equivalent of our Clifford Pier in Singapore.  As part of the redevelopment plan, the authority closed the operation of Clifford Pier and relocated the pier to Marina South but the former wll be conserved and redeveloped as part of downtown plan at Marina.  Though they closed Clifford Pier, I think the new plans are exciting with more space for activities and people to gather.

If they have closed it and intended it to be another commercial area, it would be robbing the public of history and space for recreation.  In this case, they are creating more space for activties.  I applaud the idea and trust that the authority will do its best to strike a balance between conservation and redevelopment.

As for Queen's Pier, if it is just purely a commercial project with more retail space, then this is sad for history, the protection of historical sites and conservation.  With so much retail space in HK, the true victims are actually the retailers who fork out hefty sum for rental while the developer/landlord kick back and relax.

I didn't know you exist until a few weeks ago when I watched the movie "Protege".  It felt like I just woke up from a deep sleep for years when I read your blog.  WOW! you have been blogging since 2001!  

My neighbour is trying to help me navigate the world of movies and drama as she found out it has become my new found interest.  Recommended I see "New Police Story".  I cannot find the movie in the stores.  Please forgive me for searching Youtube.  I found it but could not bear to watch after the 3rd episode due to the violence and brutality.  

"Blood Brothers" is on the big screen now in Singapore so I am going to catch it soon.  

One question, you mentioned that you are going back for an operation to remove the screws and plates on your ankle.  My father-in-law experienced the same a couple of years back but he left the stuff in there all these years.  How you considered that too or is it not a good option?  Operation will take a long time to heal so it is best avoided.  Let us have your take on this since you have consulted so many doctors and probably have access to very skillful surgeons who bother to explain things to you.

Hey there daniel...i agree with ur article abt the queen pier..as an architect grad i believe that politics is a bane in architecture...modern society is run by these businessmen which somehow diminishes the role of architects.well i guess thats the way it is now..ciao

Yes, i really feel pain when i heard that they are demolishing the central old pier and Queen's Pier. I couldn't believe it. and i don't understand why we, as the citizens of Hong Kong, are not able to protect our cultural wealth from being taken away.....
