Exhibition as process – Sense of Place

The different place and space in art is one of the endless topic of Contemporary art. Once the work of art exhibits under different locations, it is unavoidably to discuss how and why the work exhibits in such way, especially for the work which is more site-sensitive (I pick this word instead of site-specific in this case)

I participates an art exhibition/video screening event… in which I would like to re-exam my ‘dizzy’ video in the context of different places and the consciousness of different spectators.

The Sense of place

Is it possible to remember a place entirely?
The place where we exist is an intersection of human imagination, time and space. A place is distinguished and acquires meaning only as a result of personal experience. In other words, the moment we encounter a place it is mediated and reproduced in the memory at a moment of transition between familiarity and unfamiliarity. This exhibition includes art works which engage with the uniqueness of ’sense of place’.

The length of the video ‘Journal To The Other World’ have been shortened, attempting to challenge the consciousness from the potential viewers. The Arts bar have regular ‘customer’… apart from art lover, more people come to enjoy the performance night and of course… drink drink drink! The concept of the arts bar interests me to rethink about my video, from it’s screening/exhibiting methods as well as the context of place.

The place I’d show this video, including formal and informal context, nature of show and curatorial theme. The feedback from viewer would be varied in terms of viewer’s expectation, background and culture. Here’s the place I’d shown:

• National Art Gallery, Malaysia (An international group exhibition: ASIA@ASIA: Manifesting Diversity, a busy and complex mixture under an official atmosphere)

• 1a space, Hong Kong (a showcase show ‘sideward narration‘, alongside with an exhibition called ‘Art Publication’, similar to a white cube space)

• Art’s exhibition space and bar, London (as mentioned)

I cannot predict and expect the outcome, but I may continue to show this work under different situation if it is interesting.
