Maybe a bit odd, but I've been reading some of this weird philosophical stuff lately. Most recently, I'm reading John Stuart Mill's On Liberty and Utilitarianism. Dry stuff, but every now and then I stumble across a few lines I more or less agree with.

"I acknowledge that the tendency of all opinions to become sectarian is not cured by the freest discussion...But it is not on the impassioned partisan, it is on the calmer and more disinterested bystander, that this collision of opinions works its salutary effect."
    John Stuart Mill, On Liberty

"Courage and ambition, when not regulated by benevolence, are fit only to make a tyrant and public robber."
David Hume, A Treatise of Human Nature

"How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it."
Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments
