  • New Year in Taipei

    I was in Taiwan in February for New Year, my first time. My mom's family lives in Neihu and on New Year, because there is a temple down the street, the entire street was sealed off and people were setting of firecrackers left and right.  I'm not talking a wide boulevard either, I mean a street where buildings are right on top of each other. The firecrackers would bounce off of the buildings. It was like a colorful war zone. It went on for seven hours. Amazing. Little kids were carrying out bucket-sized fire crackers to set off on their own. I was looking around for the parents. Makes me think that our fun in the US is too restrained.





    I think this guy is asleep.

    those photos are cool. looks like good fun.  Don't know about the States, but in NZ we have idiots that shoot firecrackers at pets, houses and (unbelievably) fire fighters who arrived to put out blazes.   Its because of idiots like that that we need restraints in NZ =(

    I remember playing those in taiwan when i was young....... can't do it anymore here in nyc,.. it sucks

    Eric, this is how I used to spend my New Years in Taipei!  Your pictures really brought back some great memories.  I used to save most of my new years money and go to the corner store in order to purchase as many firecrackers as I could.

    Lunar New Year or January 1st New Year? Whichever one it is I'm sure it's a lot more fun that the states.

    Crazy - those little ones! My maternal instincts freak with kids and fireworks!
    When is New  Years? It's so confusing with the different calendars! :)

    Cool pix. I was into fireworks for a little while b/c there are fireworks in my thesis film. Supposedly the town Yanshui in Taiwan has the craziest firework presentation - they shoot at people in the crowd and everyone wears extra thick clothing to protect their skin!
