The Journey of Don
Jose
Oh muse of
darkness,
Permit me to tell
the story of Don Jose,
Who journeyed
forth into the night,
Seeking
immortality.
One night you find
the hill you climb too steppe,
The burden on your
back too heavy,
The cold you feel:
bone deep.
You push yourself beyond
your limit,
No turning back,
the dye is cast,
You set your
sights on the next summit,
and promise that
it will be your last.
But every pinnacle
that you reach
reveals, deeper
valleys and new mountains you must breach.
One day you find
the lack of those who might give you a break,
No way back, no
place to rest, no easy route to take.
One day you stop,
you've hit the wall,
Muscles clench you
want to fall,
Forward seems
hopeless,
Backwards so
pointless,
But still you find
your standing tall.
Why don't you
drop,
You can choose to
stop,
No one to force
You on this
course.
No energy to
think,
Knees buckle, you
sink.
Arms spread, eyes
raised,
you gaze to the
heavens,
And permit your
soul to take leave of your flesh.
Your soul is
stubborn and remains unmoved,
For 3 figures
approach and their eyes approve.
Hope, Loneliness
and Pain, they declare themselves to be.
"We have a
test, a choice for thee."
In demonic verse
they announce their role:
"Sent by the
devil to claim your soul".
"One of us
you must embrace,
In your soul we
will find a place.
One of us, you
must choose,
To walk with you
and help you loose.
One of us you must
dismiss
Be wise in choice,
his company you'll miss.
The two you choose
will remain with you
'Til journey is
complete.
But if you fall,
just one more time,
The devil, in
hell, your soul will meet.
At once you stand
up straight,
defiant to the
grinning Three.
'Loneliness we
shall walk,
For you have ever
been with me."
Now pain is a
haggard wretch
His scorched skin
over bone did stretch.
Beneath his horrid
appearance
Came flattering
phrases of assurance.
Although you know
his words aren't true.
This tortured
beast looks much like you.
Fearing
overwhelming 'Pain',
You turned from
him and looked again,
At Hope...
Hope is beauty flesh
incarnate,
And from her
visage radiates light,
Though her aura
draws you in,
Her smile you find
is far too bright.
"Hope, my
dear, I've searched for you
Desperate for thee
to my core.
But now I see
what's really true,
That you are
nothing but a whore.
"In time of
need I was a fool,
Thinking you might
get me through.
But you have
always been so cruel,
Now its time I get
what's due.
Your sweet words
shall not sway,
For I foresee you
will betray.
I embrace pain and
dismiss thee
In this way I
shall be free.
"Pain you
shall come with me,
You shall make me
strong,
Hope, in me, shall
never be.
My faith in you
cannot go wrong.
On your constant
presence I can rely,
You shall fuel my
soul and I'll get by."
So with your new
companions you set forth,
Without hope, nor
purpose, nor a goal
Pain and
loneliness fuel your wroth,
The devil waiting
to claim your soul.
One morning you have
find your stride,
You forge on -
it's what you do.
The devil sulks
with wounded pride,
Unable now to
obstruct you.
One day the hills
will flatten and the road will firm.
Loneliness will
depart and pain won't burn.
One day the road
will lead you to a beach,
And all before you
shall now be in reach.
One day the sun
will rise where dark sky meets black sea,
And the glorious
day that was promised, shall Be.
