I recently watched the doc of my friend Jaeho Chang. It's called Ultimate Christian Wrestling. In case you aren't familiar with his work, I encourage you to check out his Alive Not Dead profile.

Although he was tramautized during the screening by an uncooperative, skipping DVD player, the NYC premier of his film was quite a success in my eyes. His doc follows a group of Christian wrestlers who impart religious values and beliefs during the course of their wrestling matches. I don't want to give away all the details, but just imagine a character who plays Jesus getting pummelled by a bunch of other wayward wrestlers with creepy names.

Jaeho focuses on three characters in this group, each with their own personal challenges. One man, divorced, faces financial woes and other troubles. But in the ring, he soars, and that is his place of refuge and strength. Another character comes across as slow and a bit lost, but punctuates his conversations with Southern wit that even Woody Allen would die for. His tyrannosaurus rex impersonation is not to be missed, and in itself should make him a Wonderkind on YouTube.

What I liked about Jaeho's doc was the moments of poignancy intermixed with humor and a cohesive storyline about a world that few of us have ever experienced. I think there will be inevitably be references made to the movie "The Wrestler". I liked the "The Wrestler" but I feel like Jaeho's movie conveys the full depth of that world, not just the glossed-over semi-Hollywood version of Wrestler-Meets-Stripper.

Anyway, enough said, check out Jaeho's profile and learn about this up-and-coming filmmaker.
