Had a breakthrough a few days ago and managed to arrange and lay down another entire new song. Possibly the hardest track I've ever written. And I mean hard as in hard to play.

The Bass groove is off time all the way through the song, but with a solid drumbeat eventually slips back into time. Took me about 4 hours to work out how to play the key riff to fit into the beat but eventually it came together! the guitar part is even harder, imagine Nuno Bettencourt mixed with Jane's Addiction and you got the right idea. Totally accident riff that just wouldn't leave my brain once I found it in my head!

Also the chorus riff is very progressive. Very catching vocals and solid melodic repetition, yet the guitars and bass flow and change without real repetition.

The one thing I'm really happy about is finally learning how to adapt key changes into songs.
The key change in this song comes in at just the right time, is broken into 4 parts and each section having a different drumbeat that basically kicks in on the beat, then off, then back on etc..
    crazy but great to play!

For those of you who didn't know, I usually write in the key of D and generally stick to it. Now bands like Creed, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Deftones and nearly all new metal bands generally don't move out of this tuning either. (unless their guitars are tuned half step Db or down to C)
However it's something I've been wanting to do for a while now until recently simply haven't known how to.

One guy I have really seen work great key changes recently is Khalil Fong. He always uses clever chord progressions and key changes and for someone in pop (especially this side of the world) and I admire how he manages to get away with them!

We've got a practice later on and I can't wait to the song out with Gavin and Law!

Written and laid down in three days has to be a record for me considering the last song took me 4 months.

Oh as well I've been uploading parts of our new demo album for free download at www.gongwuband.com feel free to go over and pick up some of our older tracks!
    :)
