Another very interesting blog, Luke... when does one stop being a fan and starts becoming an admirer instead?
For me, when it comes to admiring an artist, it's mostly about talent and the quality of the work - that's about 80 percent of the whole package. But if I said that looks and outward personality had absolutely nothing to do with it, I'd be lying, and I'm not gonna lie to you, 'cos it does play a part for those of us who are on the flip side and supporting you.
And I said "outward personality", because we only see what you want us to see. As human beings, we all project a certain image of ourselves to the outside world. But only we truly know ourselves on the inside, and what's really going on internally. So in the case of artists, it is "outward personality" that counts.
For some, the gap between the "outward personality" and the person inside is very small, and they want to share most of who they really are with the world. For some, this gap is pretty large. But it's different strokes for different folks, so who's to say what's right or wrong, good or bad?
As for some artists coming up with lower quality work as time goes by, that's really their prerogative, 'cos I can name several artists who actually get better with time and not worse... folks like Lee Hom, David Tao, Jae Chong, Van Ness Wu, A-Mei and Machi have improved over time, in my opinion... but yeah, I get where you are coming from, it's not the same for everyone.
