I know many of you will find this hard to believe, but the reason I haven't been blogging much of late is because I'm too damned busy writing.  This writing is for some projects I have in the works and it cannot be shared until it has been handed over to the folks I'm writing for.  The "big" article should be done in 3-4 more weeks (at least on my end).  Its about HK director Johnnie To.  When I started that project, I never anticipated that it would take me the entire summer and now half of the fall to do it, but that is what has happened.  Still writing the first draft, with one large section to go.  Then its time to read everything I have, add all the footnotes and regularize my references and rewrite until it says what I want it to say (or what it needs to say).

The other project is in the realm of creative fiction.  A friend of mine is an actor in Hong Kong and has asked me to write a story for a short film script.  I know that sounds simple:  sit down and write a story for a friend.  He even wants Leslie Cheung to figure in the story (indirectly).  What could be simpler?  Ah, maybe learning brain surgery.  I have some ideas, I know how it starts and how it ends, but I'm having a little trouble working out the middle.  I'm doing a bit of research for this one, too.  The story is set in HK in the recent past (New Year's Eve 1996, to be exact).  I wasn't living in Hong Kong then, so I'm reading for information and also the sense of what it was like in Hong Kong on the eve of the year that would turn HK into an SAR of the PRC.  I don't think you can set a story at that time in HK and not take the impending Handover into account.  So what am I reading--not what you'd expect, maybe, a book about the avant-garde theater group Zuni Iconosahedron that produced many, many theater pieces that captured the spirit of that uncertain time.  Zuni won't play a role in the story, but some pronouncements by the helmers of Zuni in those days, as quoted in this academic study I'm reading, have got me thinking and making some interesting connections.  Now if I could just figure out how I'm taking the reader from point A to point E. I might feel a bit happier.  Time to go sleep on it.  Sleeping, driving, brushing my teeth, these are the times when some of my best ideas come to me.  I

Off to bed, to sleep, perchance to dream... and maybe get an insight into this short story.
