• Beach Spike on set

    I had made sometime away from the teaching, so I could be made available for B & E Productions next project Beach Spike (熱浪球愛戰.)  Of course being away for a bit I did not know of the many changes that this film had gone through since the last time I had heard of it and the changes that occured in our own production company, but that did not stop me from pushing head on! 
  
    Beach Spike was a film that Bey and the other members at the office had been talking about, all I new it was going to be the beach, volleyball, and kung fu!  Working on The Blood Bond was a dream come true and now working on a more local film, what many told me would be considered a more local Hong Kong film I was excited.
  
    The week before principle photography began I was able to attend the different meetings.  This included meeting most of the cast, the crew, sitting in on the script reads, and just helping get things ready!  Hey, I even got to help out on some of the volleyball training, more translating to the actors then my volleyball skills!  Too bad, I don't get to show off my underhand serve enough these days! I should also mention I did do my fair share of running for coffee and catching cabs!  But it was so much fun!  I was making movies!
  
  First Day -
  
    Bey and I had gotten to the location early, to check things out, the water reservoir if I remembered. Actually it was called something..."...pump"  but I can't be for sure.  We would be outside for the day and into the night and getting some sun was refreshing, but little did I know that we'd be out in the sun a lot more in the upcoming dates, after all it is a beach movie.
  
  

  
  
  

    I had always wanted to be part of a "Bai-San" a traditional ceremony passed on from occasion to occasion for blessings throughout.  It was cool and though I didn't eat much, the pork/pig is always crunchy n tasty! Ssweeet!
  

  
  

  
  
    The first day was busy for me, but I quite liked it, anything to help Bey and overall to help this film get made to be the best that we could make it.  I was on the phones a lot that day,
  conversing back and forth to various actors, getting things ready for the upcoming dates, couldn't have done it without Vicky back at the office and the other AD's from the production company T-Films tracking them down on the set. All while the other guys interning with us, got to chat things up with actors and stunt crew, because somebody had to keep them company.
  
    It was also on this day that I got to watch another favourite actor of mine go to work...actually two of them!  Lam Suet - 林雪 (in the picture above tied up against the gates) and Lam Chi Sin 林子善 (back turned in the blue shirt.)  Lam Suet is someone who I'd been studying more and more.
  Though I may not like all the films he's in (and he's in tons of them) he always plays "a character."  PTU, Breaking News, The Mission, Mad Detective, even his small roles like in Kung Fu Hustle and Dog Bite Dog.  He is real - no bullsh**, no matter which character he's portraying, and the real Lam Suet is like that too, very genuine. 
  
  Lam Chi Sin from Shaolin Soccer and Kings of Comedy both films of Stephen Chow just totally creates the character in his own.  In both of these films his "timing" is just fun to watch and enjoy within the overall arc of the story, you just have to watch it to see what I mean. 
  
  

  
  
  
  
  

   After the First Day
  
    It was real great of Bey to allow me to attend set with him.  It was exactly where I wanted to be. Each day I could see how things unfold, how things functioned.  Not only that, but I really started to feel how what I was doing could have an effect on the production too. I kind of saw the things I had to do on our part in this collaboration...pretty much without having someone tell it to me! 
  
    For example, this film consisted of all languages, primarily Cantonese and English but also a little French, Spanish too!  Each day I would print out the script in both Chinese and English for the actors who needed to read for both!  Thing was, this got difficult because everyday I was on set and depending on what time we'd wrap I'd have to coordinate with Vicky back at the office and the other AD's what we'd be shooting the next day, whether it changed or and it did many times.  Good thing was there was a lot of support between us that we just worked hard together and got it done.  Sometimes little obstacles stood in our way and miscommunications did occur but again I learned from the first film, "nothing gets done, until it gets done."  And I also learned, "no matter how complicated things seem at times, you need to take care of that first thing in your presence, then move on and on to the next thing."  I still give thanks to Bey for teaching me whether through his examples and me observing him or from his actions and I at the bi-product of it.
   
  

  
  
  
  

    This was after the rain, it poured and poured and we were at a house, we waited it out, and not before long we were able to continue rolling and get all the shots we needed for that day. You just never know in Hong Kong. Sometimes its super humid and sunny or other days its cloudy and rainy or all in one day, or in the summer Typhoon season, you just never know!
  
    Soon we'd find ourselves on the beach!
