So it turns out that an investment group in China signed on as minority owners of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now articles are popping up about Chinese fans dreaming of Yao Ming moving to Cleveland to be paired up with Lebron James (see here).

My first thought after seeing those articles is .... they got it all wrong. Lebron James should move to Houston to join Yao there.

First, Tracy McGrady's contract expires in 2010, the same year that Lebron James can hit the open market. McGrady has a max contract, which is what Lebron would be seeking. So, if we don't re-sign T-Mac we should have cap room to sign Lebron.

Second, with Yao Ming on the team, Lebron is going to have a ton more fans from China than he already has. Which will mean more endorsement money for him. This is probably as good a lure for him versus the attraction of the big market teams like the New York Knicks.

Third, Cleveland's team is pretty weak outside of Lebron. Houston, on the other hand, has a very strong and balanced team. They beat the Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals TWICE without Yao Ming, T-Mac, or backup center Mutombo.

Fourth, Lebron would solve the one huge problem that the Houston Rockets have: SCORING. The Rockets have always been an incredibly strong defensive team, but their scoring stinks. Lebron is the best scorer in the game. He's also quite a decent defender as well.

You could also let go or trade the non-productive players like Brent Barry, Brian Cook, and Dikembe Mutombo (career ending injury) to look for a bigger backup center -- someone like Chris Anderson from the Nuggets or Marcin Gortat from the Magic. Let's go with Marcin Gortat since he's 5 years younger than Anderson.

Now, just imagine this lineup (where Lebron replaces Tracy McGrady and you sign Marcin Gortat):

Note that it also gets the Rockets a lot younger. T-Mac is 30, Brian Cook is 28, Brent Barry is 37, Dikembe Mutombo is 42. Lebron James is 24 and Marcic Gortat is 25.

STARTERS:
PG - Aaron Brooks (24 years old)
SG - Shane Battier (30 years old)
SF - Lebron James (24 years old)
PF - Luis Scola (29 years old)
C - Yao Ming (28 years old)

2ND TEAM:
PG - Kyle Lowry (23 years old)
SG - Von Wafer (23 years old)
SF - Ron Artest (29 years old)
PF - Carl Landry (25 years old)
C - Marcin Gortat (25 years old)

3RD TEAM
SG - James White (26 years old)
PF - Joey Dorsey (25 years old)
C - Chuck Hayes (25 years old)
+2 extra roster spots

If you wanted more scoring on the Starting lineup, you could swap Ron Artest and Shane Battier.

Obviously this is a dream scenario, but if the Rockets could somehow pull this off (get Lebron and Marcin), that's a Championship Team right there.

Just imagine this team against either of the two teams going to the Finals this year (Lakers and Magic):

MAGIC
Yao Ming on Dwight Howard
Lebron James on Rashard Lewis
Ron Artest on Hedo Turkoglu
Shane Battier on Michael Pietrus

LAKERS
Yao Ming on Pau Gasol
Ron Artest & Shane Battier on Kobe Bryant
Lebron James on Lamar Odom
(or some combination thereof, not sure if that's the best matchup)

This team would be able to shut down just about any offense out there and have some major scoring (Lebron James, Yao Ming, Ron Artest) to boot.

dood. i thought about that the other day. and also looked at tmacs salary .... it does 'make' sense, and i would be the first to say yes cuz that wud be r-i-d-iculous to have lebron at houston. china would go ape. houston would rule china. and. all the tourists would go there too. so then allstar game houston - we have lift off. come to think of it, yea that would be a cool headline for lebron going to houston...

wow interesting! Poor Yao Ming this playoffs anyway. Now looking forward to watching the finals(Lakers vs Magic) this week :) Have a nice day!

Though I've never been to Houston but Cleveland ain't that great anyway, kinda like Ohio.

I think Knicks or Pistons has a better chance to land James.

But I'd love Yao to come to the Lakers heheh

we already have sun yue and he might get a ring before yao does.

honestly i love lebron.
never thought about him joining the rockets.
he's just too involved with cavs.
not sure how this would work out, but seems like u got it down pretty legitly :D
honestly tho, not the biggest yao ming fan in the world. and. i dont really see how lebron shud care about fans in china.
sure money, but he gets tons already.
