    sorry, more nerdy nba talk.

one thing i've noticed is that every year daryl morey will end up purchasing a few 2nd round draft picks for $2-3 million each and use those to draft some decent players that they later end up using and/or packaging in trades.

this is a huge advantage for teams with money.

so this got me thinking ... the new jersey nets are probably the richest team out there now that the russian billionaire just bought it.  couldn't they use that money to go out and buy every draft pick out there available for sale?  and/or offer huge sums to buy very high draft picks (would a team be willing to sell a top 10 draft pick for $10M or $20M)?  and package these draft picks together to move up in the draft?

if they spent, say $50M, could they end up with 2 or 3 top 10 draft picks (in addition to their own #3 draft pick)?  and if so, assuming they drafted well, couldn't they have a great young up & coming team like the Thunder in 2-3 years time?  or if $50M wasn't enough, what if they spent $100M?

on top of that, bill simmons had a great idea about spending $100M to get phil jackson to jump ship over from the lakers.  imagine if you combined these two ideas.  the nets spend $200M and land phil jackson as coach PLUS get 4 top 10 draft picks.  maybe that's enough to lure a lebron james or chris bosh over to lead the team.

if you're going to make a big splash this year, go all the way!

This is actually how the Bulls got their second string of championships before they started the salary cap limitations, so they paid Jordan like 75 million for 2 years and then Pippen and Rodman for ridiculous amounts, another issue is that although the draft is "random" some players fake injuries or refuse to play after being drafted, then they become free agents and jump ship to the teams they want to play for with a new deal...

They implemented the salary cap and the luxury tax just to prevent rich teams from buying their way to the championship.
