Was just thinking, from an entertainment industry perspective:

1) Hong Kong's music industry would probably be a lot stronger now if Hong Kong switched its primary language to Mandarin instead of Cantonese. By doing that, they'd hit the China, Taiwan, and Singapore markets in addition to their own. The language issue is why a lot of Taiwan artists are so huge in China (versus Hong Kong). The Hong Kong strategy of having Mandarin versions of popular Cantonese songs isn't a good enough "fix" either as compared to having every song and interview originally in Mandarin.

The movie and television industry would be less affected by the language switch since it's pretty easy to dub or subtitle those. Plus, if you look at the movies, a huge percentage of them are already made specifically with the Mainland market in mind.

2) Singapore's film and television industry would probably be a lot stronger if they killed off the "Singlish" English accent and switched to an American or British English accent. Otherwise, I think it's really hard for their industry to properly reach a market outside of Singapore (which in and of itself is not large).

There might be other economic advantages from both of these countries making the switch, but the entertainment industry advantages are the ones that jump out at me the most.

Obviously, there would be major cultural reasons for not doing so ... so I imagine nothing like what I suggest above would ever be implemented!

xibanyae ... i was thinking about this too. i think part of the thing is ... some accents "travel" better than others. english english accents, french english accents, italian english accents are alright. singaporean english accents, though, i think ONLY work in singapore.

actually, i think most asian countries' english accents don't "travel" well. i think most european english accents do.

this topic can be complex, i had exactly the same feeling years back when i watched a martial arts flick made in chile, which was pretty decent but the dialogues were in this thick chilean accent (obviously), but not only accent, slang, local expressions, etc..

this fact, made the movie for non-chileans very hard to digest, so i asked my chilean friends why not trying to use a more neutral spanish accent and they looked at me like if i was crazy... (or even arrogant)

back to asia, the market in china is huge, but the culture in HK is strong and distinctive, therefore, as in the case with the chileans, is not only a cantonese -vs- mandarin issue, it has to do with special slang, gestures, made-up expressions, tones of voice, and the list goes on....

i remember jackie mentioning how in the movie little big soldier, his characters wasn't funny at all for the HK audience while mainlanders will laugh every time he said 'ting hao de'...

if the movie is made with international appeal, it loses its local appeal. imagine trainspotting with all those guys speaking in a neutral american accent while immersed in the edinburgh drug scene. it will never work! it would be awful! ;)

Well, there are a number of reasons why they don't inplement this. If you take those factors away, it'd feel less "local" for said territories and the people in said territories will feel left out. Even up to this day, there are Hong Kong people lamenting how alot of movies don't cater to their own people. So that is one thing to take into consideration. The market's a bitch!

born in la, moved to maryland when i was 5, then back to california to go to college. joined my friend's company in xiamen and ended up moving to china. then worked on a project with boys from alive (alivenotdead.com) and spent most of my time in hong kong. now back in california! lots of changes in my outlook on life, the universe, and everything over the past few years. abc, but my chinese ain't that hot. super high metabolism, though it's slowed down a lot recently. look young, feel old. while driving, the guy in your rearview mirror singing at the top of his lungs to himself. highly optimistic, except when it comes to girls. tend to only like the ones that wouldn't like me back. believe strongly in karma and the golden rule. agnostic. not interested in politics. tend to assume the best in people. oblivious to sarcasm and jokes. feel that life is too short; felt that way for as long as i can remember. if you're not happy where you are, do something about it. take the road less traveled. afraid of heights, speed, and the supernatural. wish i could fly like superman. left handed. obsessive compulsive. very neat. drink socially, but don't smoke or do drugs; i don't trust my willpower if i start. poor willpower, but strong ideals - which unfortunately can result in hypocrisy. pick things up quickly, but also quickly lose interest in things. bad at keeping in touch. lazy, but ambitious. overpowering conscience. can't cheat or tell lies at all. introspective. care too much about what other people think. shy and aloof with strangers. yet if i'm in a club and a song i like comes on, i will be the first one on the dance floor. want to be popular. want to be in a band, be in a movie, write a book, create a game, and more -- if only there was enough time to do it all! try to push people to reach their potential. nerd leader. want to be the nice guy that doesn't finish last.
