interesting article about a mixed race girl (half black, half chinese) competing in an american idol type competition in china:

all the racist remarks are pretty bad, but i think it's something china needs to learn to deal with. the planet is multi-racial, and the days of one country one race are quickly coming to an end.

and if you ask me, she's pretty cute!

I'm sure they wouldn't go into all that details about her mother cheating on her husband if he was white ;(

This is one problem I don't find in many Japanese or Korean. Well she got the best of both world and her mother did the right thing by keeping her child even thou she knew the outcome.

Maybe my point is a bit weird, but there's still a possibility that this is the way she promotes herself.
It is quite unlikely for that many people to condemn her just because of her race.

China has a lot of catching up to do with the rest of the world, and not only economically. If they traveled more and if more foreigners lived and worked in China, I think things would change slowly. But it will take a conscious effort on the part of the Chinese who, traditionally, have not viewed outsiders in a positive light.

I just read the article more thoroughly (I only skimmed first time) and realized that the whole relationship btwn mom and dad obscures the issue. it seems people are not just responding about race, although the racism comes out through it. it's also about infidelity, etc.

I remember feeling a connection upon meeting Korean Chinese friends, Chaoxianzu, like Cui Jian (ethnically Korean in China) and Manchurian friends, etc. that sometimes these people do feel different. And that's only 2 out of like 50+ tribes. When I met some Chaoxianzu friends it seemed they also had a shyness which may have been related to being minority status - sometimes that status overrides your actual belonging to ethnicity or sense of patriotism, I think, b/c minorities everywhere can probably feel that connection. I also saw a very interesting article in China about the Han race - about a hidden away area where they were living in an isolated fashion, away from the rest of the world, which showed what their culture was like in a "pure" state. One of their traits, according to the article, is "politeness"... don't know how objective that is but I'd like to read more about it.

This blog made me look up the demographic breakdown of China to see "Well, how many black and white and hispanic or whatever people actually live there."  I was thinking it would be very few, but I had no idea it would be so little to even register as far as I can tell.  The only "ethnic" breakdowns are all categories that in the US we'd still categorize as "Chinese."  (People in the US would not know what you mean if you said someone was "Han" (which by the way is like 91% of the population anyway which is a HUGE majority.)

Actually I think if I lived in a place where pretty much EVERYONE was white I would feel really odd.  There are places in the US like that, but I've never lived in one.

In a totally unrelated note to that, but related to the linked story..... People on the net are incredibly harsh and there is recently a book published specifically researching this.  I will try to remember the name.... but anyone who reads much online or games knows that people online act in ways they'd never act in person due to the anonymity. It's sad though that people when free go for being mean.  Makes me worry how they are treated in their lives ("identification with the oppressor").

is not only china, or chinese, that need to learn...., the comments on that page linked in this post are not exactly written by chinese!

this is a universal thing... and not only race based (if there is such thing as race!). we humans are /that/ stupid and only find ways to fight and segregate between our own (human) kind.... :/

Wendy, I don't think you would wanna hear her sing. Her voice is...abysmal.... Other than that, China needs to learn how to rationalize with racial harmony. Back when I was in Hong Kong, I got this really bad vibe from Mainlanders myself. And that is only because I am a CBC. Instead of having to stop hating others, they need to learn how to stop hating on their own kind first.

(I've even faced this kind of discrimination at AnD thru other Mainland members of the site...but that's a whole other story)

How sad! I hope the next generation will be more open minded. My husband is dark for a Chinese man and I have a feeling my daughter will be as well once I let her see the sun for an extended period of time.
