If you're up for hearing more about the presence of Asian men (or the lack there of) in Hollywood films, here's a podcast that might interest you. It features a discussion about Rain and his leading role in the film Ninja Assassin. Its an excellent discussion about Asian representation in film and its tendency to lean toward leading roles only in martial arts films.

But what really f#%$ me up is that the leading actress is a BLACK WOMAN, although you would never know it from all of the previews...... and like Romeo Must Die, god-forbid there would be a romantic scene. I mean what's so romantic about black women (rolling my eyes). Anyway, if you have time, take a look if you have time.

In Asia, South Korea's Rain is a pop megastar with platinum albums who's toured the world, playing to stadium crowds. But in his first lead role in the U.S., in James McTeigue's "Ninja Assassin," he plays, well, a ninja assassin.

For Asian male leads, breaking into Hollywood still pretty much means starring in martial arts movies, even if, like Rain, you're not a martial artist. This week on the IFC News podcast, we look over the careers of other leading men from East Asia who've tried to transition into American film, and wonder why the same old patterns seem to keep popping up.

Here I go all late:
You're right.  I had no clue there was a sista in the movie.  What kills me is that for the past 2 years or so Koreans have become the new Asian.  Almost all the Asian characters of any note have been played by Koreans.  Bi (Rain), James Kyson Lee, John Cho, Daniel Dae Kim, and the gorgeous Lee Byun Hyung.

I don't think I can finish the podcast.  This Matt guy is making me want to stab him in the eye with a hot melty spork.  Then take the annoying Alison and stab her in the eye with the other end.  Their voices are grating.

I'm glad Kelly decided to breakdown fairness into something she could understand, but, personally that bullsh*t.  What is fair is simple.  If the damn movie is about Japanese culture don't plop a white man in the middle of it and call it The Last Samurai.  If there's a hip hop movie taking place in the Chicago ghetto, don't put a 6'2" white guy in it that looks like he just stepped out of an Ambercrombie ad.  If there was a movie about the potato famine with a cast of nothing but black actors, I'm thinking there would be rioting in the streets, news paper headlines, talk show topics, etc etc.

OK. Used to have this long ass version of about me....but, I figured its time for an upgrade. So. What to say?

I'm a southern belle meets black nationalist with an international flava. I'm a historian and a brainy chick, so dont come with the dumb isht. I like it when you reach my level.

I have many passions - travel and history being at the top. Love Chinese and Japanese history, but the American 1960s civil rights, black power, red power, yellow power, white power, brown power movements are the events which define me as a person and an intellect.

I like PBS, Sci-Fi (Star Trek forever baby!), History Channel, book stores, and other geek like actvities. I LOVE music, film, tv, and art. Not all that creative myself, but like to see it in others. Where I am creative, is in the things I write. And on ocassion, I cook food that will make you slap your mama, but you rarely catch me in the kitchen these days. I'm a busy girl.

I like being open to new ideas, new passions, new adventures, new tastes. I'll try anything once, although it may take me some time to get to it. Did I say I was a busy girl?

Most of all, I like learning something new everyday. So, if you feel like sharing a little news, a little humor, a little music, a little opinion....then this is the place for you. Tell me something I didnt know!
