I have to admit, I am addicted to American Idol.  I actually like the real competition better than the goofy auditions.  During the final 36, viewers picked 9 finalists and the judges get to pick the remaining three.  It was great to see one of my favorites, Anoop, get picked to compete for the final three slots.  But that got me thinking.  Where are all the Asians?  I have been to enough karaoke rooms in my time to know that we've got the pipes.  I also was a judge last month where Kollaboration held their annual talent show and sold out 6200 seats at the Shrine (where they used to hold the Oscars),  The vocal talent is deep in our community.  What gives?  The last time I actually remember even seeing someone yellow on the show was William Hung.  What gives?  Does this bother anyone else or just me?

It bothers me too! That's another reason why I want to make a mini-documentary about people with mental illness. There's enough "white" faces I know that stepped up and spoke out.
Now it's our turn to dare to step up and speak out to eradicate the shame of having mental illness.
If I can give a list of famous people ,dead or alive ,that have some sort of mental illness, their fans would be surprised. It's about time  a "yellow" face speak out, not only to the Chinese audience here in China, but also to the Western world.

Well we cant take over the world just yet Teddy! What about "Americas Best Dance Crew" 3X in a row went to Asian dance crews, how can asians be the best dancers and singers in the world? Well besides the natural talent its the relentless discipline and strive for perfection. Its just also a ratio, so its only a matter of time before we have an Asian American Idol or maybe even president....

There was an Asian female in the top 10 last year.   I actually direct video bits for their live concerts, so I'm familiar with the show because of that.  Kollaboration is an impressive show and any one of the singers in that show might have made it to the top 36 at least.  However, I bet if you asked them, none of them tried out for the show.  That might be an even more interesting question:  Why would none of the bother trying out (if my hunch is correct)? Looking at youtube alone - it's literally overflowing with Asian singers.  How  many of them actually tried out for idol?

Of course, narrowing down from 100,000 - there's a lot of fluke and luck involved too.

Hey Teddy, I've watched quite a few seasons of American Idol now... and besides Anoop and William Hung, there have been at least 3 other Asian competitors that I can recall... among the finalists were Jasmine Trias (Filipino) and Sanjaya Joseph Malakar (Indian), and among the Top 24 was Paul Kim (Korean)... but yeah, there should be more.
