just a warning, this is a reading one.

been thinking a lot these days about the kind of work i've been doing. i have been re-evaluating and trying to look at the work more objectively. i realized that what i have become known for, (for the few that know) is something that is moving in a different direction. maybe i always knew that the polished, rendered work would always come secondary to the rawer, more immediate work i know. as much as it is great to engross myself in the details and preciousness of my most recent work, there is definitely a side of me that wants to throw all that out the window- and be less preoccupied with technique and structure.

if you've seen my sketchbooks, this probably comes as no surprise to you. as what i do in there is the kind of work that is most diverse; and while most of it is "ugly", i can proudly say it is most representative of the purpose of creating "art". because hey, let's face it, sometimes ugly is just a reality, right?

so what's my deal? since the show, i have been immersed in trying out new techniques and reviving older ones to spark that "something" in me that drives and drives the work. as you'd expect, this kind of playing around leads to a questioning of concepts and execution. and that's what's happening, i am questioning.

does technique and structure work in the same way conceptually as physically? in the sense that if i'm being comfortable and formulaic in the work, is that ultimately paralleled by my thought process? it scares me a bit- to lose the fire for work, and the desire for new ideas.

but why answers, right? maybe an answer will put the fire out.
