Feng Xiaogang's latest film, the war epic 'Assembly' has been doing quite well in its first week at the box office in Mainland China. The gritty war film set during the Chinese Civil War of the 1940's took an estimated 70 million RMB (~US$9.6 million) in its first weekend. This is considered a big success in the Chinese market although not quite at the level of the previous week's film, Peter Chan's 'Warlords' which took 90 million RMB (~US$12 million) in its first weekend. Peter Chan's numbers are of course helped by the star power present in his film, namely Jet Li, Andy Lau and Kaneshiro Takeshi.
Despite the success of both films, thus far Ang Lee's Lust, Caution' is still the top earning Chinese film of the year at US$20 million total.
