Several times a year the HK government opens personalized plate requests to an auction. At the first auction under this system Actor/Singer Aaron Kwok paid US$32,000 for the plate 'AARON' -- undoubtably for the favorite of his famous Ferrari collection.
But prior to Sept 2006, bidders could only buy standard issue alphanumeric combinations. But because of the strong Chinese tradition of numerology, the prices paid were also quite high: Jackie Chan paid approximately US$200,000 for the plate '123' in Feb. 2006, and in 1994 a businessman set the record for a license plate when he paid upwards of US$2million for the single digit plate '9'.
All the money generated from the auction goes to government recognized charities.
