Mamoru: A Robot To Assist The Aged

This device is an interesting conceptual robot created by the University of Tokyo, and is designed to assist the elderly in their daily tasks. The Mamoru may not have arms or legs for active assistance, but it does have something that many old people lack: memory.
The eyes of the Mamoru are designed for more than just aesthetics. These are wide angle camera lenses, and Mamoru is designed to scan objects with image recognition software.
How is this helpful? Let’s say that grandma can’t find her remote control, glasses, or slippers. The Mamoru will politely tell her where they are because it is not susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease. It can also be programmed to remind her when to take her medication.
Of course, you have to question the ethics of this. Do you really want to leave the senior citizens that you love in the care of this robot? Sadly, all I can think about is how I want the Mamoru to be able to do more active assistance work.

Reminds me of the documentary "Mechanical Love" - it spoke of a mechanical pet devised for the old and lonely in senior citizens homes to help them express their love to, well, something because their loved ones where not around to cuddle ...

My mom's afflicted with some senility and there are times we have to look for things she's misplaced but how do these bots find things like a purse that end up in the freezer? We once canceled all her credit cards etc. and we ended up finding her bag stuffed in a dresser drawer upstairs. Lesson learned.

Again, they're on the right track but a ways away.

A 21st Century Contemporary Art Gallery in Hong Kong....

In the 21st century, a new genre of art has developed and its rapid growth has been unprecedented. The way people view contemporary art nowadays has created a new and formidable player in the Art market and even national museums have had to sit up and pay attention to this burdgeoning phenomenon. The line between fine-art and street-art/graffiti is now blurred, with its acceptance and recognition by the art establishment also bringing with it criticism and dismissal.
Adapta is a satellite gallery that attempts to bridge the gap between the understanding of the European and Asian art markets, creating a dialogue which, until now, has been relatively unobserved. We believe that the talent-pool that “Urban Art” offers is extraordinary and hand-picking each artist specifically for each show will demonstrate, educate and provide a wealth of inspiration for the youth of today.
Our first project will be held in November 2008, in Hong Kong. We have curated an exhibition of 5 UK-based artists, including Cyclops, D*Face, David Bray, Word To Mother and Vesna Parchet. Although the variety of work can be considered eclectic, it is precisely this reason why we chose them in the first place. From the famous street-artist D*Face’s two-dimensional graphic art to the rich textures of Vesna Parchet’s styled character-based paintings, a plethora of mediums, emotions and messages are employed for the viewer to digest.
With two shows planned per year, Adapta will continue to be a cross-cultural pioneer and strive to bring the most sought-after and progressive artists to Hong Kong’s doorstep.
