The launch of "321 Solstice", Adapta's 4th show in 12 months, was really well received by the HKG public, with way more people than the beer could handle turning up! I just want to say a big thank you to the Artists, (Bill London, Cept, David Bray, Friendly Liu, Graphic Airlines, Jon Burgerman, L1ES ONE, Phil Ashcroft, Swoon & Vesna Parchet) and the Schoeni Gallery team for hosting such a good night in conjunction with Adapta and we hope we can continue to do more group shows in Asia for 2010!

Adapta Gallery’s third curated project will be held on November 12th - November 29th 2009, with a show in Tokyo called Close Encounters. The show consists of 8 British-based artists, including Best Ever, Cyclops, D*Face, David Bray, Matt Small, Sickboy, Word To Mother and Vesna Parchet.

The variety of work on show is eclectic, and that is precisely the reason why we chose them in the first place. From D*Face's two-dimensional graphic art to the rich textures of emerging artist Vesna Parchet's styled character-based paintings, a plethora of mediums, emotions and messages are employed for the viewer to digest.
This particular show is very close to our hearts as we are finally able to put together an amazing line up of artists to produce works for our Tokyo readers and Japanese collectors to see in person. We have been interviewing and working on projects with so many talented British creatives over the years and to finally curate our own show in Tokyo for our main audience is a true honour.
On the opening night, we will also have special guests: Usugrow, Jeff Soto, Shohei Takasaki, Yoshiki & Nagayama also showing their works.

Vesna is the only female artist in Attention Spam exhibition. Being of German origin, she was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan until the age of ten.  She has been exposed to different cultures from a young age and at the age of twelve she concluded that art is her passion, which has translated into raw talent already from that young age. Her artistic training includes a BTEC Foundation Studies in Art & Design and a National Diploma in Printmaking at London College of Printing. For Vesna, “art is a reflection of life observations after all”, therefore she took 3 years time to travel around the world with the aim to enrich her life experiences.

He completed a degree in Illustration and Design and worked as a freelance illustrator/designer at an agency whilst honing his street work. D*Face held his first major London solo exhibition, Death & Glory, at Stolen Space Gallery, which sold out on the opening night in October 2006. Following, his exhibition Eyecons at the O Contemporary in Brighton in March 2007 resulted in another sell out show. D*Face was the owner and curator for the Outside Institute, a contemporary art gallery in London that focused on street art. In 2005 the Outside Institute moved and re branded to become the Stolen Space Gallery. The gallery has been at the forefront of the London contemporary art scene for the past few years and D*Face has been considered by some as one of the top curators currently in London. “I run a gallery called Stolen Space which was originally an umbrella for my own art and other artists. I liked the idea of artists "stealing space".  I wanted to provide a creative melting pot where artists could be represented fairly and have a gallery that is artist run and led.”

David Bray graduated from Central St. Martins, London with a degree in Graphic Design in 1992 and has been a freelance illustrator since 1996 where he has developed an extensive portfolio of clients, including Harvey Nichols, MTV, Various Production, Puma, H&M, Vodafone, BBC Television, etc... His compelling works reveal his lifetime love of drawing and an active imagination. Bray creates intricate, time-consuming drawings, which explore emotion, utopia and a world of fantasy, mainly taking women and animals as his motif. Many of the works are based on past experiences, old relationships or current friendships. Taking artists such as Allen Jones from the 60’s and Eric Stanton as a source of inspiration for their erotic and almost fetishistic works, Bray establishes his own illusionary space. He has managed to create a unique world of his own using mainly the pencil, paper and pen as his tools of the trade with computers having as little influence as possible in his work. In this day and age, that is something to be extremely proud of. “It seemed as if Graphic Design was becoming more digital or computer-based and I wanted to explore the illustration side of things more.”

Cyclops is an artist under the name of Luc Price, whose works can be found predominantly on the street as well as finding its rightful place in galleries. His iconic works can be identified from Manchester, Bristol to London. He first tried his hand at graffiti at the age of thirteen, while his doodling in school caused him to be suspended quite often. On the street art front, Price can be seen collaborating continuously in London and abroad with other street artists such as Beejoir, Sweet Toof and Sick Boy. He plays a major part in BC Crew and is well-known for his skull character.

Word To Mother is an English born artist who attended art school and studied illustration, beginning his artistic career in graffiti. His style is so warm to look at that you can’t help but feel attached to the characters in his paintings. Each piece, often painted on wood which he collects at random, looks like it took years to evolve as his unique layering skills meld to one another effortlessly.  His sophistication in layering technique brings complex texture into his pieces, and each of them evokes a feeling of sentimentality and recollection. “However, within the environment around me, influences on me are colours, textures, rust and decay. I love things that are worn away and have previously lived.”
