WHY Change Now????!!!!!!

Why NOT???!!! Simply put back to them, if not now when?

Perhaps it’s not just Hong Kong, perhaps it’s everywhere, but 10/10 times you’re asked what you do?, I’m a Banker, Fund Manager, Insurance Director, Director of XXX Car Co, Doctor, Barrister, Lawyer….yada, yada, yada……..then comes “I’m an Actor”……and silence.  Why?. 

Confused? As am I.? It would appear that being an Actor is immediately associated with either A: Fame and Fortune and I want to be your best friend syndrome, to B: Thinking in their grey-matter, well I haven’t seen you in any big movies so you’re a struggling Actor/Artist, I’ll move onto the next person. Or at times you’ll get the C: WOW! That’s sound cool, what an easy job heh?, easy….easy….EASY?!, hmmmmmmmm, that’s generally when I grit my teeth and give them the actor’s generous smile, “Sure, if you think so, pat on the shoulder routine and excuse myself to the bar for another triple espresso!”.

How would one approach a question if they don’t have the big gigs behind them, and if they did surely they would not be asked such a question right? So it’s technically a catch 22.

Having moved from Broking, to Insurance, Fund Management then finally IT Tech for GPS/GPRS/AGPS so on and so forth systems for coming up to 5 years, I decided to branch out, let go and be myself. 

Now sure if you have the family background things are generally easier to get your foot in the door, or if your relative is of someone infamous in the industry as was one of mine the late A.M., of whom I never dreamt of contacting.  Why?, because this is an opportunity to express yourself completely, no more shows, being dangled, sitting behind a desk for 18 hours a day.!

Easy is certainly NOT a word in the Acting industry, it takes a huge amount of commitment, time (of which we never seem to have enough of, nor able to spread equally between whether they be TVC’s, Movie’s, over family and friends and all importantly “ME TIME”!) but that’s the industry, you’re on call 24/7, 365 and if you can’t fulfill these basic requirements, then you best stay put. 

You’ll be mocked, humiliated, but end of the day you’ll be noticed and hopefully with luck get nabbed by one of the big guns to get your footing into a “A” grade gig.!.  Once there, let the mocking begin as it will subside as long as you don’t rise to it. 

So for those that think this is an easy change, think twice, the pressure is more if not as severe as the position you are in, right now know one has it “EASY”, and we make the most of what we have and can get, it’s up to the individual to network, push and pull Producers, Directors, and convince them you’re the right one!
