Some random thoughts here... As a lot of you must know by now, Heath Ledger died from a drug overdose awhile back but there has been very little coverage on Anthony Minghella's death about a week ago. I just want to pay my respect to a very talented director who unfortunately passed too early. One can only imagine what other beautiful works of art he could've produced. There's been a lot of talk about the Tibet riots, China's response, Western media's coverage and what the Olympics mean to the general Chinese. I've been reading tons online (I'm a news junkie btw) and found the majority of the views overly simplistic with no context in terms of history. An objective view of who the Dalai Lama is and what he's done or what kind of society Tibet was before the invasion in 1950 could help provide a more nuanced coverage of what happened instead of arguing over the exact number of fatalities. As the Beijing Olympics draws near, there are more talks of a boycott among other things and I found an article on Huffington Post that really gives a nuanced view of the whole matter from the Chinese perspective. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-doctoroff/tibet-beijing-and-olympi_b_93920.html Finally, the 2008 baseball season is finally upon us. I bleed pinstripes btw. For those who don't know baseball, I'm a crazy Yankees fan. Let's Go Yankees!!! Watched almost all the games last season. Read all the news, watch all the video highlights, read most of the blogs and even some scouting reports... There are only two things I like more than the Yankees in this universe and that's coffee (once, I almost bought a coffee roaster to roast my own coffee at home) and Macs (I love the company so much that I actually bought Apple stocks back when it was at $14 with my rent money, only if I didn't sell it to pay my rent, I would've been many times richer!) Time to do my "Yankees Dance" to appease the baseball gods for them to win it all in Octorber!

Spent the last couple of days running around the Hong Kong Convention Center at Filmart, which is the film marketplace event held annually for film buyers and sellers to meet. Thanks to Mike Chan who I keep bumming passes from to get in. I find myself in unfamiliar territory as I was surrounded by film buyers and sellers who are very different from film people in production. But it was a nice experience to see the more business side of film, after all, it is a business. It was neat seeing so many films, about 99% of them I have never seen or even heard of, showing on tv screens or their posters plastered on tiny booths.
I also got to see some films from the HKIFF. Saw The Mad Detective (HK), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (US) and Secret Sunshine (South Korea) and am going to go check out In Love We Trust (China) next week. I enjoyed The Mad Detective quite a bit. It's quite refreshing and totally Johnnie To, which is you know, Johnnie To. Was a bit disappointed with Before the Devil, but maybe I had high expectations because of Sidney Lumet. And Secret Sunshine is a pretty heavy film but very deserving of the awards it received at the Asian Film Awards. Particularly Jeon Do-yeon. She's f-ing incredible. First of all, to cry that much in a film is inhuman and inhumane. She must need a freaking six month vacation to learn how to smile again. But most of all, she really pulled the film together and congrats to her winning best actress not only at Asian Film Awards but also at Cannes. Well deserved.

This is my first blog ever, so bare with me if I screw this up. Just got into HKG three weeks ago, just in time for some "Lai See" which is nice. Haven't received one for 12 years, it takes getting use to. Thanks to some friends here in Hong Kong, I got to go to a few events the past week. The Nike event at TST on Friday and the Pat Lee event Saturday. Both lots of fun, meeting lots of interesting people. There's definitely a lively energy everywhere I turn and it's quite exciting. I've been slacking off on my screenplay, so I better get back to it. Feel free to contact me via email although I usually check it 2-3 times a day. I have a whole theory on email, well, I'll save it for another post : )
