We’re a useless bunch of people, making useless things that many people want, and many people wish that they could be a part of. We have demand on our side… but it’s all artificial. Like the stories we tell.

Indeed... I didn't write the comment as something hurtful, but more as a reminder especially for those people in the film industry who take themselves far too seriously. :)

i think i got the comment, the word useless sounds hard when written, but when spoken, if it's said with some sarcasm, with the right gesture, then the whole paragraph changes meaning or at least intensity.

movies are artificial indeed, but despite their artificiality they can actually transform people. or if not transform at least greatly inspire them. the best example is bruce lee.

ps. btw, my younger students sometimes mention the characters in WUSHU and how they want to be like them on the carpet! true story!

OK, if that's what you meant.

I agree with your latter statement.  People really lose all perspective concerning celebrity and filmmakers and entertainment.  Both about themselves and how they are seen by the public.  I can only speak from the public's perspective but I really can't think of one person whose autograph I'd want or photo I'd want to be taken with.  It just makes no sense to me.  If given an opportunity I'd want to shake a few hands and say thanks but that's about it.

And then if I'd meet anyone in that position and they'd be a-holes about it, it would ruin it totally for me.  And I'd have to laugh at anyone who thought they were something special because of what they do.  But there are haughty, arrogant, delusional people everywhere.

Sorry I got a outspoken with my first response.  I was just being honest and open.  You just keep being a super professional and the people around you will follow.

Thanks Antony. I agree whole heartedly. We may never cure cancer or save a life but maybe...just maybe...we can inspire someone who cries at the death of a sick child on screen to become a doctor, or make some kid aspire to be a fireman, cop or other life saving work. So I hold by what I said, We can humbly try to get good messages out there that entertain, inspire and make a difference in a life. That's not useless in any way! Hope you're doing well! It's always a pleasure to hear from you!

Love the passion from you LClem and Flagday. The comment I made is not to put people in the industry down, but to put perspective in what they do. We are not doctors, firemen, farmers... people of these professions who have real honour in the work that they carry out day to day. However, we are often looked upon by the public in loftier heights, and that's simply wrong.
To be working in the film industry is a great honour bestowed upon us by the public. But don't let that honour blind you. We are here to do a job, and to do it to the best of our abilities. We CAN give people hope and meaning, we CAN change their perceptions and hopefully bring greater good to man, some even say that we save lives. But in the end, realize that we are VERY lucky to be doing what we’re doing, but we should never lose perspective of our place in society as compared to those who make greater sacrifices day to day.

Have to say this as well. Some of my best memories have to do with seeing films with my family. I never saw my father cry...EVER....until I went with him to see ET. Sure, he claimed he had a cold, big tough guy that he was- but for the first time, as a kid, I learned he had other feelings and was not just the tough "man of the house" and occasional funny guy. He COULD cry. A few years later he died and I am SO glad I was there to see that a simple "useless" story could move the man to tears. My mother and I went to comedies. We loved to laugh together and these useless films gave us great times and lines to use on each other to cheer eachother up when we were sad. And when my parents died I turned to movies to cheer me up. Now I have my own girls and I take them to movies and I hope they have great memories of their silly mom who cries at every sappy sentimental moment and laughs the loudest and repeats goofy dialog that some screenwriter hoped would work for us. When I was offered the opportunity to help a friend with his projects and become a screen writer, I felt so proud to be part of this world. I am being given the chance to make someone laugh, cry, maybe even learn something about something they would never experience outside of a film. You don't have to make a world class, oscar winning film to teach a small lesson. Don't underestimate this industry. And don't insult what I aspire to

As a screen writer who hopes to entertain, that makes me very sad. I don't want to be thought of as useless and someone I work with considers me VERY useful. My script may be fiction but I hope it is genuine and I hope that the movie made from my work has a purpose, if only to take one person's mind off of their stress or problems for 90 minutes or so...

Bullshit.  That's like saying the Bible's just a bunch of stories, 90% fiction, which a lot of people like but useless?  That was just the first thing that occurred to me.

It's YOUR job to make meaning out of at least some of it.  Sure people like to be entertained with "useless" flash and little substance but for the movie-going public that's like the only hour and a half out of our days where we can get lost from our own troubles.  That's frigging value if you ask me.

Then there are those rare, very rare occasions where your art is elevated to the sublime.  That's what we all hope to create some day, a moment of sublime accomplishment.  Maybe you haven't had yours yet and maybe this is all just practice but you have to keep trying.

I'm not in your biz, and it is a biz, but I have lived.  If you feel useless you probably will be useless.  So snap out of it and get to work.  Don't make me come over there.....wherever the hell there is.

Antony received his first degree from Bond University, in Australia, with a double major in finance and media productions. Topping his year and gaining awards, including Excellence in Student Film Direction and Best Overall Achievement in Video Production, Antony was offered a scholarship for a Masters Degree in Mass Communications, which he declined.

Lived 3 years in China during which time he advanced his studies and training in wushu (Chinese martial arts) at the Beijing Institute of Physical Education (now known as the Beijing Sport University).

Speaks fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

In 1995, the Szeto directed one-shot music video, EXP's "Come Back to Me", was voted Philippines Top Ten Music Video.

Won a Director of a First Feature Film Award from the Australian Directors Guild for DragonBlade. The film was also nominated for a Golden Horse Award in 2006, and was one of five films selected for the 2006 Golden Rooster Hundred Flower Film Festival in China for the HK, Macau, and Taiwan film selections.
