Jet Li A&E Biography

You may remember (or not!) that way back in September, I wrote about how I was asked to go to Toronto and film a segment for A&E's Biography show on Jet Li. The production company was going to send me a screener and let me know when it would air. Well I checked with them the other day to find out the status and I was told that the screener was sent in January ( never said when in January, mind you!) and that all she knew was that A&E told them it would air in December!! I hope I didn't miss it! Any Jet Li /Biography Channel fans out there know if it's been on and I missed it??

Now that I mentioned this, the screener just arrived in the mail! There's two things I find truly shocking. First, that I got so much screen time!! I'm seen or heard an awful lot! Second...I look really really fat Maybe it's the wide screen format. Even the picture of the magazine I write for looks too square. I know I was retaining water that week... Yeah that's the answer.

I'll just pop off to the gym now.....

Apheresis Donations

When times are tight (which is often!) I still want to be charitable and help people and so, many years ago I found a way to do a good deed that costs me nothing but time, and yet it's a donation that is priceless. I donate apheresis. This is a kind of blood donation that separates platelets from your blood to give to cancer and leukemia patients who have low immunities. One donation of apheresis has the same amount of platelets as 5 units of whole blood. And because you get back the rest of your blood, you can donate 24 times a year! It's something I've been doing (and trying to do at least once a month) since 1989. I first found out about it after a whole blood donation. It takes quite a bit longer than a regular blood donation but it is well worth the time.( For me it's a nice opportunity to sit back and watch a movie without my kids interrupting!) I urge anyone who has ever donated blood to give it a try. I'd give more info, but this site does a better job than I can!

Hard Times

We've been very lucky so far when it comes to work. My hubby, Sean has very rarely had a hard time finding drywall work to do. It usually gets slow in the winter around here because very few houses are being built this time of year anyway, but there's usually something like remodeling jobs. But this year is very tough. The only job the contractor he works with may have coming up (if he wins the bidding on it) is 3 hours away, but it's a huge job that will keep him busy until spring. He'll be away from home for several days out of each week. It will be great for us cash wise but since I'm usually out the door and on my way to work by quarter to 5 in the morning, I have to find someone willing and able to come over at 4:30am and get our daughters up in the morning and onto their buses to school since Sean will not be there for that. Oh well, things could be worse but I'm very cautious about who I trust with my girls. It's why I was a stay-at-home mom for them. Seems there are too many times when I see something in the news about "trusted" day care or babysitters who do horrible things to kids. I have no family living near me (both our parents have passed away and our brothers and sisters are far flung in California, Long Island/NY city, and Florida!

On one hand I really hope the contractor gets this job and Sean works it, but on the other hand I'm going to be a nervous wreck! At least they go to the same school district that I work for and I can check up on them.

I remember reading about a young girl (9 or 10) in rural China whose parents both had to leave her for months. She was left to care for her younger brother as well as an ailing grandmother and she had to quit school to do so. So yeah, things could absolutely be worse. I guess the girls will adjust and whomever I find to be here in the mornings will work out fine. ..hopefully. The biggest adjustment may be for our youngest, Jojo as she's Daddy's little girl and will miss him a lot. Well, no sense worrying about it until we know for sure it's going to happen, I guess. I just have to prepare (and clean the house since we might have someone over here in the mornings!! ACK!)

Can't Go Home Again...

I was born and raised on Long Island, in Huntington, NY but moved up here to Rochester (after a brief stint near Los Angeles) after discovering the area when hubby and I were dating and he came up here for college.

We try to get back down there every year because he still has family there. Every time we go we have to do two things: get a descent pizza and have a burger at Conte's Burger Haven in Huntington. But I just got word that after 47 years, Conte's is gone, another victim to the bad economy. I have such great memories of the place. It was an old fashioned place that looked like one of the original Mc Donald's but MUCH better food. My Dad used to bring me there when I was a kid, though mostly it was after a dentist appointment (the dentist was nearby and Dad could not just drive by!) My mouth would be numb from novacaine but I'd still try and eat at least the fries. The strawberry shakes were great!

This is just one more place that has dissapeared. Every time I go back I notice something else is gone. The hardware store I used to work in...gone. The restaurant where we had our wedding reception...gone. Mei-Ting, the first Chinese food restaurant I ever went to...gone (they used to have a sign outside that said "We Serve Children," and my Dad convinced my brother he could sell him there for meat if he was bad!) The Rose and Thistle, a great restaurant with a Scottish/English theme...gone. I tried to take our daughters to see my old schools. The elementary school I went to (and much to my friend's amusement, still remember the school song for) is now a nursing home. My Junior High was bulldozed. At least my High School still stands though if you go inside, you have to pass through metal detectors now, due to the crime! Bowling alleys and movie theaters where hubby and I used to go when we were dating..gone. Even CBGBs in NYC where Sean introduced me to the joy of mosh pits (not that I participated but it was cool to watch!) is gone!

I wonder if the house where I grew up is still standing....hope so. My Dad built a lot of the masonry around it, as well as a huge barbeque pit, a grape barber and a patio. Maybe I'll just enjoy my memories and not risk driving down that street when I go there again.

When Richard Cooper of Screen Power/Jade Screen told me he had been in touch with Vincent Sze and that he was willing to be interviewed by me, I was quite happy to hear it. But, having read his blog about his accident, I also wanted him to be comfortable as possible. As he mentioned to me, "Living with the cast is very difficult to do almost everything," and so I let him decide if we'd talk by phone or he'd answer my questions by e-mail.

Well, nice guy and trooper that he is, he did indeed answer my many questions by e-mail and I just want to thank him here for his help and for his supply of wonderful photos that he sent to go with the interview. I know that our readers will be very interested in everything he had to say and so, as soon as it's published, I'll let everyone know.
