Not my favorite Forsythe ballet - but a damn good one nonetheless and arguably his most important work, as it cemented his place in the canon. Created on the Paris Opera Ballet and premiered in 1987. The music is by Thom Willems. Just after Balanchine died, Forsythe emerged as the internationally heralded champion of ballet - providing a new (and much needed) take on neo-classicism and 'contemporary ballet' - making it a relevant form for the 21st century. The angular aesthetics of Balanchine are sufficiently evident here, but also evident are the boundaries Forsythe pushes and the risks he takes as a choreographer, in addition to his unique use of and relationship to space, lighting, and music.

One can also find recordings on YouTube of the Mariinsky (Kirov Ballet) doing this work with Svetlana Zakarova, and while the her extensions are more extreme - the soul of the work seems to be lost and it moves from a dance to a series of unfelt acrobatics...I think this has largely to do with the way she contains her energy within her body...while it's clear with Syvlie Guillem that she's radiating outward, and focusing more on the performance of the work than on what it requires technically.

interesting music!! i don't normally hear stuff like that in a ballet!

I can see how this would be a tough piece for the dancers, especially when it was first created and they were first trying to figure out exactly how to dance it. The music is so rhythmic and has a tendency to break down into 4 beat units with a slight pause before the next unit begins on the downbeat, This, combined with the movement that is in 4 beat units itself, especially for the first section, gives it a choppy quality that I could see would have the potential for degenerating into isolated poses. Even in the clip you provided, I see some of this in the opening section. But what redeems this video is that the girl really works the lyrical section of the choreography, where the movement begins to play over the top of the marked musical rhythm with its own internal logic and rhythm that is not an illustration of what the music is doing. This section is nice in terms of the choreography and the dancing because it creates tension by the way it juxtaposes with the music. That is where Sylvie's talent as a dancer seems to really come out in this video.

Charles Slender is a San Francisco-based international dance artist who has performed, made choreography, and taught in the United States, Russia, Hong Kong, Poland, Latvia, Mexico, and France. He is the founder and Artistic Director of FACT/SF - a contemporary dance-theater company based in San Francisco. His choreography, with commissions from art galleries, universities, and dance companies, has been described as "balancing on the edge of kitsch and something more serious...paradoxical and interesting" (Natalia Kurumova, dancenet.ru) and as "sexy...vicious...bizarre" (Ariel Soto, SF Bay Guardian). In addition to his work as a choreographer, Charles teaches contemporary dance technique at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley, California and continues to perform, most recently in works by Jesse Hewit, Laura Arrington, and Todd Courage. He was also visiting faculty at the American Dance Festival in 2009 and 2007.

A California native, Charles has continued to work both at home and abroad with commissions by Electric Works Gallery (San Francisco), Dialogue Dance Company (Kostroma, Russia), Acid Rain (Chelyabinsk, Russia), and the Yekaterinburg University of the Humanities (YUH, Yekaterinburg, Russia). In 2007, The Fringe Club (Hong Kong) presented three new works Charles developed in collaboration with Emily Woo Zeller. In 2006 and 2007, he performed with Provincial Dances Theatre in Yekaterinburg, Russia, under the direction of Tatiana Baganova. With Provincial Dances he toured internationally, taught company and master classes, and collaborated on the creation of new works.

Charles graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, with degrees in English Literature and Dance and Performance Studies. While at Berkeley, Charles received the Chancellor's Eisner Award for "highest achievement in the creative arts" and the Hickman Undergraduate Scholarship for "continued excellence and achievement in dance".
