  • OH dear... where does the time go...

    2012-02-29 8:28AM / 會員可以看

What's been going on and on?  :   Stuff
What stuff... well....... it's been so long since I've been on here i guess i have to bullet point it :

    - new house
    - new relationship (ha not so new now huh?)
    - new funding for Focus On Film from the HK government
    - new job teaching at CIS
    - writing three new scripts

    Okay,  That's about it!
Oh:  I"m super happy about all of it by the way.  I may even write a blog entry or two now that I've remembered I'm on AnD!!!

In the meantime:  why did I remember I"m on AnD?  Because my friend Ross Clarkson sent me over his short script and I LOVED it.  I"m helping him out putting this one on its feet.
We are looking for GOOD actors.  Here is the deal-  DOOOO it:

Casting for a short film.  A twisted comedy based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Seeking one male and one female actor between 25-35 years old. The roles are dramatic and challenging with extensive English dialogue.

This no budget production is being shot and directed by an accredited feature film DP.  You will receive a copy of the final film for your showreel.  The production is aimed at international film festivals and shoots soon in Hong Kong.

Interested parties please send your CV and picture to badromancecasting@yahoo.com

We spend so much time in Hong Kong working and promoting ourselves.

But i think it is time to talk about family.

    Family?  Yeah, family.

So, we are born into these units called families.  Some people think we choose which families we come to.  But if we are going to be scientific, and I am in a scientific mood, then there is no evidence and most likely it is all chance and we, by chance, end up in this unit, this entity called a family.  We maybe don’t gel with this unit, maybe we are at odds with it, or rebel against it, or join it or collude with it.  But no matter what we do, it is in response to it.

I’m at my father’s bedside in the hospital.  Watching him fight and succumb by turns.  Each episode leaves him with a balance in the negative or positive.  These days the negative taking the upper hand, and always the possibility of tomorrow, with a little more of his fighting, ‘control freak’ spirit engaged, the possibility that he will change the tide of his ailing health.  The health that he has lived in denial about for years.  His smoking, his bad eating, his lack of exercise…

Does the unit change its general nature when the relation of its members to each other changes?  I think not.  My father has just winced, his face contracting like a baby’s, as the nurse once again puts the needle in his arm.  He is exhausted, I can see it.  They have just bathed him, each roll over making him cry out, panting with pain.

What can I do?  Nothing but just sit here and tell him I am here.  Sometimes reaching shyly for his hand, sometimes talking to him like he is a child, sometimes being told- patronizingly- that I’m not helping at all.  Amazingly he has tried to get me to join forces with him against the nursing staff.  It is just like that film “All That Jazz”.  You know, when Roy Scheider gets open heart surgery but in the recovery room sneaks in liquor and cigarettes, throws parties and harasses the nurses?
Well, it was almost like that the day before yesterday.  But now reality has set in and he is just exhausted, delirious, and cantankerous.

But it is family.  And this is where I have to be..  where i am glad to be actually.  And we are glad to be with each other, in spite of our glaring differences.  And my dad has made it through the operation after all.  Something we were not sure of.  It would be strange to lose the old man.  Just too strange

    Family.  Yeah.  Family

  • CANNES FILM FEST>...... getting the hang of it!

I think i get it now.... you just have to be invited... to like, everything.

Most of the contacts are made here... in the cocktails, at the events, at the screenings...

Just a few snap shots of the China Night Party (thanks to the people at the Hong Kong Pavilion!!!) and the screen displaying Permanent Residence... a film by Scud being promoted by HKg at the festival.

For the other events... well... i couldn't carry my camera to the black tie things folks- now that would have been inappropriate!!!!  But i did steal a few shots of my friend Laurent at the avant-premiere of his film 'Le Petit Nicolas' (he also directed 'Moliere').  I was very lucky that this old film school friend showed me the town in style- complete with red carpet walk to prized screening of Agora while we got (well, HE got) recognized and announced and the big after party - what did i wear?....  sorry- no photos so you will have to guess

    more later!

  • CANNES FILM FEST>...... Early Days report

    2009-05-20 5:17PM / 會員可以看

How's this for a spotlight on Hong Kong?!?

Well, the first days at the Cannes Film Festival were a bit of an eye opener.  It is not that easy to arrive with no PR support and promote work on your own.   I know, i know... it LOOKS glam, but it is actually hard work.

We have come with seven of Focus on Film student's short works, all entered into the Cannes Short Film Corner.  The feedback has been amazing- across the board...  no one thinks for a second these are not actual adult film maker's work.  Even in casual conversation with producers and production houses you can see the eyes open wide when i explain what it is we do with the kids...  Yesterday, wonderful contacts were made with the Bournemouth Screen Academy and the Fremis (French film school).  The word is getting out!

Making my way across the floor i also plug my own personal work- in development the feature film Y4 Deathloop.  Reactions to the teaser/trailer are amazing.  Meetings planned, producers want to talk money...  but it's not my schtick!  So back to Hong Kong i will come and turn this all over to the REAL producers.

In the meantime, i will keep up the energy and keep getting those invites!  Anybody out there know anybody in attendance at Cannes they think i should look up????  Any lead is a good lead!

    Doing it:  Cannes Style!

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local Non-Profit Film School Screens 7 Films at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner

Hong Kong SAR – Focus on Film, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people through film will have 7 films screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in the short film corner.  All the films are produced, directed, shot, and acted in by students who have been through the Focus On Film programs.  They range in age from 11 to 21.  The films include:

"The Life of a Girl" (女孩的一生)
    dir 導演: Grace Yau
    -"Ana" (安娜)
    dir 導演: Isaac Harrison/Alina Luk
    -"Breaking It Or Not" (突破好麼)
    dir 導演: Kirti Nandwani/Jennifer Lai
    -"Sorrow" (憂傷)
    dir 導演:  Morgane Azevedo
    -"Orange Fall" (橙,墜下來)
    dir 導演:  Tessa Ng
    -"Orange You Glad" (橙,你很高興)
    dir 導演:  Aaron Michaelson/Isaac Harrison
    -"Orange Invasion" (橙之侵略)
    dir 導演: Lian Furness/Wingshan Smith

The first three films “The Life of a Girl”, “Ana”, and “Breaking It or Not” were part of a 6 month long program sponsored by the Women’s Foundation where the participants explored the theme of gender stereotypes.  The other films were selected from various programs in the past two years including holiday camps and the Pangea Day World Wide initiative.

This will be the second time Focus on Film’s work is screened on the international stage, the first of which was Pangea Day where Focus on Film was chosen to run workshops and the resulting work was broadcast globally.

Focus on Film’s Founder and Artistic Director Elissa Rosati is currently in France and will be representing Focus on Film at Cannes in the hopes of extending bilateral programs with other film schools and non-profit organizations.

Focus on Film sounds very interesting. I'm one of Jaine's friends (see below). I think she sent it to all of us. I'm glad she made the mistake.
