SO although this starts off with a stupid action, see how the story unfolds...

    1. I put my wallet in my front left hand side pocket.
    2. Got on Shenzhen Metro (equivalent of MTR in HK)
    3. Talking to my friend, Leon
    4.  Look down to my right and wonder why some dude is grabbing my ankle(!??!)
    5. Leon says "Check your wallet!"
    6. I suddenlty discover my wallet is gone
    7. Tell Leon "My wallet!"
    8. Leon runs off train after dude - I'm running after him going into shock saying "my wallet! Oh my god! my China permit is in there"
    9. Leon nabs dude.   I wail.  Police appear within 30 seconds(!)
    10. Go to police room in station.
    11. Turns out police know he is a pickpocketer
    12. Since I have a witness, I can choose to prosecute.
    13. Without a China permit, I have to stay in Shenzhen (penniless!) for at least 24 hours whilst waiting for a new permit to be issued and to allow me to return to HK.
    14. Policeman mentions that if I go to court for this case, lots of time wasted and guy goes to jail for just a few days.
    15. Policeman suggests I 'barter' my wallet back.
    16. I tell pickpocket in Cantonese that if I get my wallet back with my China permit and ALL the money, I will not prosecute him.
    17. Pickpocket agrees.
    18. Policeman, Leon & I escort pickpocket out of station.  (Pickpocket even apologises to me and offers me a ciggie!)
    19. A woman appears with my wallet.   Everything intact.
    20. We shake policeman's hand and thank him.
    21.  We jump in taxi and as we drive away, see the pickpocket & his accomplice walking down the street.......

So I'm back in Hong Kong and have learnt my lesson - NEVER EVER put Wallet in your jeans pocket!!  I have been to Shenzhen so many times and will continue to do so.  Just my first pickpocketing experience....

i would have put his hand in a doorway and told him i'm going to slam the door closed til i get my wallet back...   but thats just me.  :-P

they seem to like to go for people who are distracted by talking to friends,  i go to shenzhen all the time,  and the only time i've had a problem was when i was with a friend and we were walking somewhat slowly.  when i am by myself i guess i present a much less tempting target.

still amazing they could get it out of your front pocket!

lucky! and discomforting to know how the presence of police nearby (30secs?!)+recurrent arrests doesn't put some people off...

yeah I hear both of you and actually I echoed those sentiments to the policeman and he said it is really tough and his job is hard - he also said although my friend witnessed him fiddling with my ankle, he didn't actually see the pickpocketing - so although a good witness, blah blah.
Well I do think Shenzhen is like the Wild West of China so I really should have known better with my wallet.
Yeah GTOX, I kind of got the feeling, they had suggested this before.....
Overall I still think I did the right thing for ME (I'm so glad to be at home right now with my family) and I posted this blog as a warning to others.   In fact everyone is saying they have never ever heard of someone getting their wallet back so.....

thats nuts.  they just let him go?  and even if you prosecute him he'd only go to jail for a few days????  they should just jail him for months or years.

two of our co-workers both caught pickpocketers in the act there.  what i do is just never go to shenzhen.

That's well lucky you got everything back! But what sucks is the pickpocket walks away to do it again and the next victim will probably not be so lucky. The fact the police know this guys means this barter deal with the victim isn't the first time???
