This weekend me and my daughters had fun making things with clay.
My oldest had to make a project for school. The assignment was to make an ornament for the school tree... but it could not be a traditional American ornament. It had to be representative of one of the countries thy have studied this year, i.e. Italy, China, Ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt.. and a few other choices.
The project had to be made from things that the students had at home, no pre-packaged ornament kits!

They also had to write a short paper on the subject they chose.
What county, the meaning behind item, how it is used in that civilization...

She chose China and the symbol of Fu.

First you have to get the clay ready...She used these tools (these pictures are from different projects the girls were working on)

and this Fu that she picked as a pattern

Once she had rolled out the colors she wanted to use she transfered the outline of the character onto wax paper and proceeded to cut this out of the clay...

She used 3 colors of clay.
Once all the pieces were cut, she layered them and gently pressed them together.

Before she could put the leather lace on it she had to bake it so it would harden.

She used a small piece of bamboo and some leather lace (from their jewelery making box)
She drilled small holes in the bamboo, and made holes in the clay before baking.

It was done with "Sculpy" clay- it's a great low odor baking clay.
Her definition was "Luck" and she explained about hanging "fu" during special occations, and even told about Jetliang's story about haning it upside-down. :)

    THIS IS SOOO COOL!!!!!

This has to be one of the best and most neatest ideas in the world!  The ornament looks so professional.  Was this done with that phimo clay (don't know how it's spelled..fimo?)?

Your daughter did a fantastic job!
