My point of view of that comment by that French lady, however, is not so...cynical.

Hmm.. Probably they're really experimental with ALL foods, such that anything goes, and that they've even tried mustard in coffee but realise they really don't go?

I don't know exactly why but the French have an unbelievable sense of self-importance and it has almost become their trade mark. I still can't reconcile how people like them who claim to be bearers of "enlightenment" and promoters of equality couldn't see the irony of it all. They are blinded by their arrogance, unable to see that they are contradicting the very doctrines they preach.

Well, not that I have French. Of course not all of them are like that but generally. They still have that sense of "white man's mandate" i.e. to civilize the world. I hate discrimination and I've a lot of its forms. I might be reacting too much :-(

What is she talking about to begin with? What's with the unnecessary comment? Is she meant to be funny? Because jokes are funny and I'm not laughing.

Haha like how you have "a boycott list" With you on that one. Maybe I should start making a list too :p

Ugh, I get what she's trying to say, but I just don't like how she sounds so condescending.

How fun it must be that you get to party all the time! (I know, I'm sure it sounds a lot better than it is.)

I love scotch and even good blends.  They're treated with such snobbery these days.  I've never tasted a 25-year-old Chivas.  JW yes.  And my favorite blend is Pinch, so good.  I think they have a real depth and breadth.  I'm not into the smoky single malts - took a class on them ---- it was really fun studying.  lol

Fauchon acts like it's there to colonize, like it's there to civilize the nouveau riche.  Ha ha, that was TOTALLY the wrong approach.  Sure, there are times I need to be educated about something but it should be done quietly and delicately.  That rep should be history.  I wouldn't buy there anyway.  I don't believe in overpriced fictitiously valued products.

What an appallingly arrogant and stupid thing to say

Don't get me started on French arrogance when it comes to cultural senstivity and stereotyping.

A French museum was recently about to hand a shrunken head back to Maori who, imo, understandably don't wont their ancestor gawked in a museum.  The French Minister for Culture and whatever has decreed it can't go back because it is now a French cultural item.  Wtf since when did the French have the balls or the know how to shrink heads.  Are they saying ripping off indigenous cultures is their heritage - well I suppose from that angle they are right.   There are several other examples of Maori culture they appropriate when it suits them, not to mention the time some friends from Western Samoa got turned away from the border because French custom officials didn't believe that Western Samoa existed, never mind it's in every decent atlas.  I could go on for a loooong time but I will stop now.

Good for you for boycotting them.

I'm always gonna be challenging you ;)

I don't take that statement to be overly offensive. Could that statement been an over exaggeration trying to just make a point that people are extremely different from each other? Maybe the Chinese should take a step back and re-examine why they look to the French culture to be "better" or to be more "sophisticated"? I can argue and say that the Chinese invited such a statement by allowing themselves to buy into the idea that French culture is the high life. Personally, I would like to believe that living the high life is being able to accept who you are and what you strongly believe in... and even if you have all the money in the world to spend and don't know where to spend it (but to get "high society" lessons from the French) then so be it. Previously, wasn't it the English?

I understand your offense of that was said; I hear your anger in trying to boycott the corporation. Let's try to love more instead of inciting hate.

I will make my own off color comment about Fauchon and the French now.  The store is promoting French culture.  Doesn't the rest of the world know that the French invented culture and have kindly agreed to share a little bit of it with the rest of the world?  Well, their president married a fashion model, for God's sake, and she isn't even French.  An Italian fashion model as first lady.  Hah, hah!!!  I wonder if she even speaks French?  Those snooty French intellectuals who are always going on and on about how their's is the only true culture on the planet finally get what they deserve.  France looks pretty ridiculous these days.  Its about time they dropped their pretentions of superiority, they are the f*cking laughing stock of the world right now.  As if China needs France to teach it about culture.  What about the glories of Chinese cuisine in all its varieties?  What about thousands of years of exquisite painting, calligraphy to break your heart, millenial poetry that is still being recited today and was first written down  at a time when the French language didn't even exist yet?  China has so much dance, opera, and such exquisite lacquerwork to its name.  And this is just the historic stuff.  China has some of the world's most sought after artists on the art market today.  Cities in China are erecting some of the finest examples of modern architecture anywhere.  Why does China need French culture?  I think the cultural lessons should be going the other way, really.

totally agree w/ you on that off color comment too. but i have to say that i was more troubled by the new rich is having the time of their lives but couldn't give a crap about the poor... not only that,  the saddest was to hear the younger generation has this mindset that the government is so powerful, why try to change it... and since they are satisfied, why bother about the other 90% of the population who just trying to survive. (actually this was from an article from the Times last year).

Anyways thanks for pointing it out!
