This May, the Kongkretebass radars are picking up some unusual noises from Singapore as well as the local Hong Kong streets. DJ/producer Shawn Livewire showing us how he usually rocks things in the lion city Singapore. Whereas Hong Kong live bands Violent Jokes & The Projects will be kicking off the night with an eclectic mix of Drum n Bass, Trip Hop & Electronica, with special guest SpectraSoul (Shogun Audio, UK)!

From his early DJ career beginning in 1998, Shawn Livewire has gone from his humble beginnings in Orlando, FL, USA to playing across the US and now, across the world.

Bringing the sound of electronic music to every possible listener is his main goal. He has played all over the South East USA in Florida, Georgia and Texas, and across the globe in such places as Spain, London, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. Shawn is known for his crowd pleasing sets, creating an atmosphere that always rocks the party.

Over the past 10 years he has played alongside many headliners, such as : Armand van Helden, Rabbit in the Moon, Fabio, the Scratch Perverts, Seb Fontaine, Junkie XL, Judge Jules, Danny Tenaglia, Africa Bambatta, Aphrodite, Mickey Finn, Goldie, Andy C, AK1200, Hybrid, Dieselboy, Craze, Friction, Adam Freeland, Teebee, Photek, Dillinja & Lemon D, Gridlok, Mathematics, Sandra Collins, DJ Dan, DJ Icey, Rennie Pilgrim, Baby Anne, Concord Dawn, and Evol Intent.

Violent Jokes is the latest production by The Projects UK, after their music crossed the oceans and reached Hong Kong.
A live translation of The Projects acid, energetic loops was no mean feat: combining computer technology with distorted guitars, powerful synths with spank new melodies and lyrics, the result is a completely original product that will please the most demanding audience.

Inspired by the latest trip hop trends, Violent Jokes are bringing to Hong Kong an unusual combination of deep, rich electro beats originally crafted by Griff (The Projects, New Yorks Finest Taxi Service, Sushi Robot and OneDayComa) with sexy, crispy melodies sung by Shadow (Sea Monsters, Else), enriched by ad hoc improvisations played by Cla (Pentaprisma, Jazz Funkadelico). Violent Jokes has performed live in many of the major Hong Kong live shows (Listen Up!, UndergroundHK, The Fringe, Pier Pressure!, RDPlayroom Productions, HK Live!, etc.) and have recently started touring China and the Asia region.

The Projects is Simon Griffin (aka Griff) on Keys/ Samples/ Programming/ Bass/ Double Bass/ Guitar. Griff produces an energetic mix of Electro, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, BreakBeat. Also a member of Hong Kong band Violent Jokes, Griff’s musical roots are Rock, Punk, Reggae.

He created The Projects, from a desire to delve into a different kind of music and as a way of expressing his individual style of working as well as reaching out to the underground music scene. Inspired by live Drum & Bass and Electro he creates original tunes with cool beats and hypnotic grooves. Back in 2006 in the UK, he decided to get together with two drummers and play a live Drum & Bass set based around some of The Projects ideas. He soon recorded the first album, called ‘Mixes & Fixes’ , to gain broader accesss to the UK, European and Japanese markets. The debut single ‘Something Big up North’ did well in the UK Official Download Chart. The Projects is now based in Hong Kong and together with Violent Jokes, plays live gigs/ festivals allover the Asia region.

The last 12 months has seen SpectraSoul rise as one of the most exciting new talents within the drum and bass scene, and they continue to ride the crest of the wave of new producers.

Having spent the last year defining and refining their musical techniques, SpectraSoul have gained a reputation for bridging the gap between light & dark, hard & smooth, both in the studio and within their DJ sets. Last year saw the release of highly acclaimed “III Note Soul” and “Cherry Smoke” on Shogun:LTD, with both tracks gaining support from all the main players in the game and securing their place on the d&b map. Releases have snowballed from there on, with signings to Renegade Recordings, WestBay International, Soundtrax, a debut EP on Nu:Directions, and further releases on DJ Friction’s Shogun Audio and SGN:LTD imprints.

Showcasing their talents on the turntables at some of the most prestigious venues throughout the UK and Europe, SpectraSoul have gained residencies at Shogun events in both London and Brighton, and prove to be a popular choice for promoters across the globe with an ever-growing booking schedule for 2008. Having gained solid DJ support from the likes of Friction, Fabio, DJ Marky, Klute, Logistics, Commix, Break and D-Bridge amongst others, the duo’s sound has echoed around dance floors worldwide.

The coming months see releases from SpectraSoul on some of the biggest labels within drum and bass, collaborations with other pioneer producers, and some exciting remix projects to look forward to.With everything taken into account, 2008 is sure to be a big year for the duo.

Since his venture into Drum and Bass in 2001, DJ Wash has been refined his skills both on the turntables and in the studio.
Co-Founder of crews Basic (Syd, Australia – 2003/2004) and current - Kongkretebass (Hong Kong), DJ Wash and partner Electronic Mistress has been injecting Drum and Bass music into Hong Kong since 2006, playing a massive part in the growth of the Drum and Bass scene in Hong Kong and Asia.

Within his short deejay career, DJ Wash has played along side some of the most influential artists such as DJ Friction, Breakage, Big Bud, Chris Su, Jade, Shimon, Nu:Tone, SpectraSoul, A Sides, Sonic, Suv and other top playaz in the international scene.
On the Regional/International front, DJ Wash is seen deejaying in Sydney, Shanghai, ChengDu, Bangkok and Dresden, sharing the stages with many of the top deejays in those regions and in Hong Kong. Where his skill on the turntables is witnessed by many, which has secured his name as one of the top Drum and Bass deejays to come out of Asia.

With a respectable history of events promotions in Australia and internet radio host of a well respected UK website - “planetdnb.com (2004-2005)”, DJ Wash found him self moving back to his hometown of Hong Kong in 09/2005, where he immediately made his mark within weeks of his arrival.
Since then, DJ Wash has been headlining in most Drum and Bass parties, bringing in fresh sounds and skills not seen/heard before, with regular support and headline gigs at Vodka Bar, Bling, Lost, Loft9, Yumla and Twyst Mind to name a few.

Within the studio, DJ Wash is pushing forward with his own unique Deep/Dark/Tech sounds, showing that he is one of the most promising producers from Hong Kong. His music can be heard over the Television waves on Channel V’s “AMP – Asia’s Music Platform” show, and also a remix project for a progressive/experimental Czech Republic band “100c” for the album “Brant Rock” which was released in 04/2008, as part of a limited edition remix project.
Late 2006 saw a change in the Drum and Bass scene in Hong Kong with the departure of DJ Wash from his initial crew. With fresh ideas and a professional outlook on the local scene, DJ Wash and Electronic Mistress applied their effort into their own creation “Kongkretebass”.
Form its birth in 2006; Kongkretebass has played a huge involvement in the Drum and Bass scene in Hong Kong and Asia. A name which is pushing the limits and boundaries in every angle possible; with website, events promotions of international/regional/local artists, arts/design/PR, as well as a respected weekly podcast [Kongkast], all of which has elevated Kongkretebass into the international stages. With recent coverage on BBC radio 1’s Drum and Bass show with Fabio – Podcast of the week (05/2008).
