  • I saw a new restaurant...

I saw a new restaurant, about to open in Beijing the other day. It had a picture of Bruce Lee in the classic GAME OF DEATH suit and pose. Of course, I don't read Chinese, so at first glance I was like: Is FINISHING THE GAME opening in Beijing and the gang didn't tell me about it? Can't be. But, of course, my friend/translator informed me that it's a new restaurant. Using Bruce's image for their slogan: The eatery for the Asian in all Asians.

Man, years later, and Bruce is still the man. I don't know about being saddled with this particular marketing campaign, but ... he's still the man. In a lot of ways, he's in every frame of FINISHING THE GAME. And yet, he's nowhere to be seen. I love that Justin took this approach for this icon of ours.

Speaking of Justin Lin, I met some Chinese rockstars the other night through my friend Bey Logan from The Weinstein Company. Jonny Yen and his friends whose Chinese names did not stick with me. This one friend in particular was showing Bey and I home videos of him and his friends in Shanghai. What were they doing? A re-enactment of a scene from Justin's FAST AND FURIOUS. Basically, they were racing their Ferraris and Lamborginis and Porches through the streets of Shanghai in the middle of the night - clocking at about 350 km/hour!! Pretty surreal. True to form of a Justin Lin movie, they were ALL Asians. But then why wouldn't they be? It's Shanghai; real Shanghai, not Hollywood Shanghai. I didn't see one single white guy!! I was tempted to ask the rockstar, whose name I don't remember, why he didn't have any white friends ... considering Shanghai has lots of Expats.

I also saw a dead ringer for Sung Kang, my buddy. Freaked me out! I ran past him to take a good look. Then I realized it's not Sung; this guy lacked that Sung Kang's je ne se quois. Miss you, Sung, if you're reading this. Miss you, too, Roger, even though I didn't see any ringer for you. You're probably reading this as well. My two favorite Asian hunks.

It would be kinda easy in Beijing to see people who resemble people you know. haha. It is kinda crowded there. So many people I don't even have time to look at their faces, actually. The way the cars dominate the road and the way people try to negotiate the streets, esp crossing them. Very different.

I know why you 'saw' Sung out there... it's cuz you 'miss' *raise eyebrow* him. With a hunky hunk like that, why wouldn't you miss him? *laff*

C'mon Dustin!  In a country of 1 billion you couldn't find even one person who vaguely resembled me?  Hope you're well in China.  Get your ass back to America so we can Finish The Game!   : )

Yeah -- I totally ran into a Sung Kang look-alike recently. For that matter, I run into Bey Logan all the time here in HK, too... the world is a small place (populated by Sung Kang clones).

Last paragraph is hot! But what do you mean a dead ringer? lol, there's something about Sung's personality...it's not just his looks

I know trust me...it sucks being white, asians don't like to hang out with white girls, esp. male asians :(

I'm a speedskater, I've always wanted to race cars but on a closed course so no one would get hurt without knowing what I was doing.....

well I suppose the phrase "Asians all look the same" should have been "every Asian has a twin somewhere"... You look like my cousin... or rather the cousin looks like you.

By the way, love your work in Little Fish.
