Drink with Daniel

There was this one holiday season I thought I'd send a special gift to a few AnD friends. For the gift I had in mind, I wondered if I could set it up so the gift itself would be the punchline I wanted it to be.
To set things up,
These were the various responses:Anita Luong: are you serious?? no way. you mean sit down, have a drink with him in our dreams?
DanielsGirl: you must be dreaming or sleeping as you typed that.The ladies really didn't think I had any sense from that email. :D They probably thought it was just another one of those wild conversation topics we sometimes (often!) went off on. I didn't respond to any of these emails, instead letting the girls to freely banter about something so inconceivable. The less said by me, the better the surprise was going to be.
At some point prior to or after sending that curious note, I inquired as to which was their favorite image of Daniel Wu. ;)
I think all the gals were pleasantly surprised when they opened their boxes. I believe my pun worked.
I sent a mug with Daniel's image because he was the one thing we all first had in common and brought us together on AnD. I wanted us all to share something that commemorated this link.

"Blood Brothers" after-party with Daniel Wu

It was a memorable Friday evening. I managed to squeeze in two noteworthy occasions. They were:
1) With my assistance, my mother is finally making the most of her U.S. citizenship by registering to vote. A form was at-hand and was completed so that she too could have a voice in who would become the next president of the United States. She had already informed me who she'd most like to see in the White House, so that's the Party under which I registered her. I'm excited that she's actually interested in this issue. It probably took a lot of goading by her companions and I'm proud of her for stepping up.
Gosh, I still remember the quizzing I did with her when she was studying her materials to prepare for the Citizenship test. I was in my teens. So many Civics questions. And mama studied so hard. When she finally went for her interview, the kind woman asked "do you want to become an American citizen?" to which my mother replied to the affirmative. That was it! Interview over.
2) I attended this little thing called an after-party for DW's film, Blood Brothers. I did not attend the screening in S.F. due to prior plans which had all been confirmed before my late decision to attend the after-party. Once those were out of the way, I hit the road to S.F.
The two days prior to the party we had seen intermittent showers. I was immensely relieved that the sky and roads were dry this Friday evening. Sure makes road travel not a little more relaxing. I also couldn't believe my luck that there was actually no traffic congestion.
So, roads were clear and dry. My fortune continued when I found parking first at my mom's flat and then at the party venue. I was concerned about the want of street parking in S.F. It is no fun driving around in circles and trying to find open, curb-side parking. I'm one of those who feel luck is not on my side when it comes to this activity. But, lo and behold, on this night an enormous, empty space was found about 15 steps from the party locale. Sweet!
The Public was about halfway packed upon my arrival. When Pat said this place was small, he wasn't kidding.
Jane and Lilly and their friends were there to meet up with me. I quickly found other familiar faces: Greg, Terry, Amy, Nicole, Pat and Emilio. Talked with a few other people who may or may not have been AnDers (for shame!
).
The party committee decorated the place with one of those new banners. This is the first I've seen of the AnD "lanterns." Very attractive and lends a little color and atmosphere.
Hmm, here Jane and I are devising a plan of action. The problem? How are we going to get by Mr. Big-Bad-Tough-Security detail (behind us in black leather) to the VIP section? Do I grab his legs or should Jane? She's already got her jacket off so I think this pic was immediately taken after we decided she was going to go for his knees. I'd hold my drink and her jacket, and then trample on fallen Mr. Big-Bad-Tough-Security with my bad boots as we climb over him up the stairs. Ready to rock-and-roll?
It's a good thing we were successful in peacefully finding our way to the prize upstairs. I was glad to find DW looking pretty tonight. No glasses or naughty caps to hide his prettiness. I'm attempting to show my new fashion accessory on my left wrist - a special wristband. No, I wasn't about to kung-fu-chop anyone.
I do have long fingers, don't I? Or DW has short fingers.
And I was standing this close to DW. It's a long way down from here to the floor.
Those are my fingers around his left bicep. Very firm indeed.
I can't recall when was the last time I visited a club. *thinks hard and draws a blank* I had intended to stay only for a relatively short time so didn't party 'til the wee hours. I guess I left right about when things started heating up - I missed the raffle drawing - a few people received some lovely, complimentary Cathy Pacific tote bags or tickets or what-not. Overall, it was a very interesting evening at this rare AnD event on these shores and I'm glad I came out to participate.

SFIAAFF - "Crossing Over" with Daniel

On Saturday, I made it out to the portion of S.F. International Asian-American Film Festival taking place at the Kabuki Cinemas in Japantown.
No rain this morning which made it conducive to hang out at Japantown and enjoy the indoor and outdoor SFIAFF festivities.
Here we are at the queue prior to the "Crossing Over" panel discussion.
Inside with front and center seating. The theater was one of their smaller (smallest?) ones. Seating could not have been over 120. Very intimate indeed.
The man on the left, Andrew Ooi, works for Echelon Talent Management which represents Maggie Q, among others. He mentioned that she studied Mandarin for months in preparation for her role in Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon.
"Let me start by talking about that hideous accent I had to affect for my role in Around the World in 80 Days." No, he didn't really say that in so many words.
This is Dan answering one of numerous questions about his preference to use his natural, non-Asian accented English in the roles that require any use of English. It started out by DW sharing his experience in one of his earlier films, Around the World in 80 Days in which it was insisted he speak with an Asian accent because it would aid in the continuity of the film's Asian characters as all the other Asian actors involved, including Jackie Chan, speak English with an Asian accent in real-life. He wasn't too pleased with this situation which is why we hardly see him doing this in his films.
DW contributed to the panel discussion by providing insight into the film world from his perspective. He was quite lively and animated compared to the other industry insiders. He talked about the possibility of someday participating in a Hollywood production - if the scrīpt was right.
I even posed a question for the panel. Nothing to do with accents.
Here, we see DW probably talking about his mother or answering yet another question about his feelings about affecting an Asian accent.
DW's mom was present at the panel. Saw her take a seat and saw her in the lobby. He acknowledged her during the Panel. Aww.
During the Q&A, someone had asked him how his parents felt about him choosing to pursue a modeling/acting career after graduating from college. He said they knew he was inclined towards doing his own thing so it didn't surprise them and they were supportive. His first film was the gay film, Bishonen, and probably was the shocker of shockers though.
Jane would not let DW slip out of the theater (which needed to be cleared out for the next feature) without getting a pic with him.

I checked my pics from last year's SFIFF and noticed DW's wearing the same jacket. haha.
I bumped into Wendy in the lobby. We had arranged to (finally) meet before she was to catch a film screening at the festival. I felt as if I already "knew" her upon our first physical meeting. She's a fascinating and funny lady. Very soft-spoken too.
Here we are in Japantown's Peace Plaza where there was live music and dancing. A mid-day snack was enjoyed at one of the many Japanese eateries inside the mall. AnD artist Scott Tang (a humorous and talented guy) joined Cass, Jane, Wendy and I. We shared a big laugh over something we all have in common at the moment (besides being Asian and AnDers).
I had had enough excitement out in S.F. It was evening and time to head back to the home front. From the San Mateo bridge, I captured this cloud formation over the Bay.
