    These days, when I travel, I am so focused on packing, getting to the airport early, get an aisle seat, calling my friend before the plane takes off to make sure someone is getting me at the airport, then calling again when the plane is on the runway to make sure my friend is waiting for me at the baggage claim. While flying, I'll either burrow myself in a magazine or a book that I bring along. I hardly look around to see who is sitting next to me. I'm so self absorbed in my tasks.
    Today the lady who sat next to me asked if I could turn the air down, I was a bit annoyed at first, but politely complied. To my surprise, she thanked me, then proceeded to tell me that this was her first time flying. She introduced herself and told me what a wonderful time she had visiting her brother in California. She lives in North Carolina and she usually takes the train when she travels because she is afraid of flying. She told me of the many pictures that she took on this trip. She had such warmth and beauty in her eagerness to share. Her sincerity and friendliness broke my barriers.  I started caring about her. I asked If she was okay or if she was still nervous now that she took her first  flight. She smiled, like a little girl,  and said that she liked it and will do it again the next time she travels. We had a very pleasant conversation. After we parted ways in St. Louis, I actually missed chatting with her. As I continued my flight to  New York, I  realized I had a window seat, which I never do.  I  lifted the shade and looked down. I saw these beautiful formation of clouds below, as if  they were folds of angels breath supporting the plane. I was mesmerized by this simple vision. I realized I have been so focused these days that I forgot to take in life...

    In addition, I realize that when we are flying how small we are. I picture myself in my room or house, then compare it to what I see when in the sky..utterly tiny.

    What a beautiful blog. I couldn't agree more. I am totally self absorbed in my tasks too. And the trips that I have taken, like ones you mentioned, the ones I have enjoyed the most, have been when I interact with people! I have been blessed to meet some amazing people during my flights across the globe. However, there are times when I do like to switch off from the hustle and bustle to have a good read. There are really no words to describe the sensation when I watch the clouds and sky when I fly. It is just so magical. Hehe! <3

    With everything that people normally have going on in their daily lives, it's just so easy to forget about life itself and the simple things.  I think people do want to reflect and connect with others but with the state of the world these days, they go into themselves rather than reach out.  I've been that way myself but then I realize that life is short and people can surprise you.

    Nowadays, my flights are totally different since I bring my son.  I had to switch seats to give a stranger the aisle so the carseat could be placed by the window.  Otherwise, he would have been stuck unless he crawled over the carseat in the middle of the flight.  We had a 2am flight so everyone slept....

    I remember my first time flying and after the change over I sat next to a guy from Vancouver...I wished I took the time to chat w/him more to learn about his travel and where he was from. He asked me a few questions and I just gave him an answer...he was interested to hear about my travel plans but after answering his questions and the plane was in the air, I put my earphones back on. Silly me - I'm not sure why I was hesitant. I'm not always good at making side conversations, but am learning... For those who are curious about which seats I prefer - I'd have to say it depends where I'm going and how long the flight is. I love the window for a bird's eye view for the scenery - aisle seats are great for easy access to the bathrooms and on trips to a nearby city.

    It's funny to think of many situations where you're so close to people yet not a word is spoken. Another scene would be in elevators. I usually stand looking at the people, not being annoying, but just curious...yet they just look up at the lights or stare at the door. I guess it's not really rude that people don't acknowledge you, but just people minding their own business.

    i usually go pee right before, get a window seat, and then sleep the whole way (or most of it).  normally don't talk to people on the flight...

    I fall asleep in any moving vehicle, except of course when I'm driving. All these years flying, I took out my camera and took pictures of take off and landing only this March. I know what you mean. I took it for granted.

    I try not to talk to people - mostly b/c I can't keep my eyes opened. One time, I was asking this guy about alcohol in the duty free store since I don't drink. He ended up on my flight. He came by to say hi and somehow got the guy next to me to change seats. He went to the WC and when he came back, I noticed that he had taken off his wedding ring!  I had to be rude, ignored him and went to sleep.

    People's stories are sometimes stranger than fiction.  My cousin and I met two elderly women today on our usual walking trail in PA.  It turns out one fled East Germany but not until after she had lived through WWII and the poverty that followed.  Her mother had to prostitute herself, and more horror stories.  The other lady emigrated from Frankfurt 50 years ago and was showing me how the "weeds" along the trail were medicinal herbs.  

    Point?  All the people whizzing by on their bikes and running with their IPods didn't stop to chat with these women whose stories were absolutely fascinating.  

    If I were a writer I would be writing all the stories I hear from people I take the time to meet and part from whose stories are stranger than fiction.

    I always try to strike up a conversation with the people around me...especially if it's going to be a long flight. If you think about it, everyone that is on a plane has a story to tell...where they are going, who they are seeing, business trip, conferences, vacations, honeymoons, weddings, etc. As long as the person's breath doesn't stink I will try to talk to him/her.

    I like sitting in the aisle because I don't like having to climb over people to get to the restroom.
