    Regret

I have a revelation today. I realized that "regret" is such  a wasteful, useless feeling - a total self indulgent energy. So you  want to do something...but you did not take action so you miss the "opportunity" . Big deal. What's the point of beating yourself up years after the fact? Life goes on! Stop being a prisoner of that lost moment because you fail to take action. Move on...
For some reason, beyond my comprehension, the popular songs that I grew up with and the popular sentiment around that time in HK were all about "Regret" . Now that I have some healthy distance from that time, I can see how much "Regret" is an oveblown, over glorified wasteful nothing which prevent fresh, new, magical moments entering your life because you are so imprisoned by the past. Stop... life is about enjoying every second of every moment of one's life so we can be open to fresh and new experience - that is  true living!

I vote for leaving regret behind because it is a great excuse for people who have no courage to allow any mistakes in their lives. But you know what, mistakes happen whether you like it or not... so if it does, cop to the fact that there is  imperfection in life and imperfection in you. It's a part of life - move on. Don't dwell and get stuck because you have to allow yourself a second chance. You know from this experience that you wlll be able to do better next time. Let's leave that wasteful useless self beating "Regret" behind and turn that into a celebration of "change" . We have to be our own best friend because we can be whatever we want to be!

I mean if we really were meant to do the so called, "opportunity" we would have done it. Perhaps we weren't meant to do that at that time. Speaking generally, of course. I'm battling opportunities I missed that might of made my career path easier and fuller. I don't think I was meant to take those opportunities? ><

I agree that if you hang onto regret, it can really hold you back from moving forward.  I think it's something that we've all wrestled with though as we wonder what could have been.  Sometimes missed opportunities can also bring forth new opportunities though.  As my husband always says - Could of, would of should of... Who has that kind of foresight?

Hahah i love your posts!! They are so interesting and so meaningful. I agree, regretting don't take you anywhere but a step into your past. Gotta move on if one wants a change to occur. I don't regret anything because of who i am today. The past has built up to my present and will also lead to my future. =) LOL i am still amaze that i am receiving and actually communicating with the real Elizabeth Sung. I love this site!

Yes, I was educated in a Catholic school. I only realized years later that original sin, guilt and regret all belong to the same useless catagory - all self-destructive, debilitating words that should be crossed out from everyone's life.

well said... at the time when I see an opportunity missed, I do get a little upset... but afterwards, I just tell myself that something better is on its way... =) being optimistic brings so much more meaning to life...

I try to explain to my grandma about being optimistic, but I don't think she will change... she's constantly talking about her past... I tell her, yea, you had it rough, but you are great now... live the life of now and not the past... as long as you are happy now, that is all that will matter... =)

Wow - it completely makes sense when you explain it that way. Thanks for your insight! I'm usually an optimist and can let go of lost opportunities - always thinking there will be bigger and better ones later on. However, I know people who bring themselves down; a lot of 'what if's', 'I could have', etc. I am always providing optimistic opinions to them to help ease the situation. Of course, I also keep in mind that everyone is different and one person may take longer to get pass this road block than another. Maybe that's why they come to an optimist for support :)

I blogged a little about this early last month but I have no regrets about anything in my life, including my serious car accident which resulted in my emergency neurosurgery because I am who I am shaped by everything that's happened in my life and if it weren't for the bad with the good, I may not have the life I have today.

I always thought regret was just another form of Judeo-Christian Guilt with a capital G.  Guess not.  It serves its purpose in the sense that you may feel a loss, or experience sorrow for a decision poorly made.  That's the old "learning from one's mistakes."  That's positive and helps prevent similar mistakes.

But you're so right that people cling to their regrets and ruminate about them forever or torture themselves long after regret has served its purpose.   Very self-destructive and debilitating.
