    QUIRK is upon us, especially with the release of DARJEELING LIMITED (which I haven't seen yet).

    For all of you who consume American culture.

    There is an interesting article in the Atlantic Monthly about "quirk" as the defining aesthetic in American Gen-X indie culture.

    While I think the article is reductive and over-reaching, it's an interesting read as it gives voice to a lot of my frustrations with American culture (though I'll gladly admit that I love ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT).

    What do you think about quirk?

    No, I totally agree. I still see "auteur" filmmaking, in its highest ideal, as a vehicle to express philosophy.

    I guess quirk works when it melds well with at strong story and interesting emotionally journey. Actually, like the author of the article RUSHMORE is the only Wes Anderson film I liked precisely because I think it does the above so well (BRICK, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE are other films that comes to mind). But, I feel like I see films that are celebrated for their quirk rather than their story or characters. These films are more invested in portraying quirky moments without any attachment to a larger story: just quirky moments strung together. LIFE AQUATIC is a great example, but I'm also thinking of films like NACHO LIBRE or PUNCH DRUNK LOVE. Actually, it's not American, I found AMELIE annoying for the same reason: clever but empty. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a fun film. Ah well, I probably sound like a crotchety old man that only watches tragedies. Harrumph.

    So funny, I was just reading a friend's writing yesterday and critiquing it as being too reliant on "quirkiness." I agree that the article is too reductive in the sense that I don't think "quirk" is something that should even be defined. But at the same time, I understand it as a defining part of American film. And in a way that I think is not always good. Sometimes the content of the American indie film world seems "small" because of the celebration of quirkiness. I'll always be a fan of "quirk," having grown up in the 80's and 90's, but I think the American indie film scene should probably grow beyond some of that into what it was more meant to be - which is another forum for real artistic expression. In that sense, we need to borrow more from foreign films (:

    damn, I am on my way out for the weekend - I'll look up the link when I get back.

    I'm a gen Xer but not American but I'd still be interested in having a look at it (not that I'm into American culture, I kinda like my own (kiwi culture), warts and all).
