  • Sincere films?

    Speaking of unquirky foreign films, a couple of years ago, I was at Film Forum watching a new print of AS TEARS GO BY, and the audience was constantly snickering at the tender moments. I find the film enormously engaging  and tragic but I think American audiences have a hard time with embracing sincerity as they guffawed at what some of the characters said. What does it say about American audiences if we find sincerity unsophisticated?

    So, can an English language WKW films do well in the US? Will MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS achieve the same level of sincerity and emotional tragedy that his other films strive for? I'm not sure because there is definitely a difference "reading" his films on subtitles rather than hearing it from the characters (for those of us who do not understand Cantonese). From the looks of the trailer I'm not sure it translates well and I'm not sure if audiences (me included) will embrace his syrupy voice overs. What do you think all you WKW fans?

    I actually liked As Tears Go By, and reading the subtitles made no difference to my sincerity towards the film. But there has been films where I have thought they go overboard on  sentiments, but another reason for the snickering could be because they desperately don't want to show tears , some can't stand showing emotions.
    Some of Wong Kai Wai's movies are amazing but then yes I do think others can push sentiments to much. I think I have to give the film a fair chance before I give an opinion.

    I think people are snickering at the heart-strings movies try to pull. Like instead of absorbing themselves in the film they're watching, they're keeping one foot firmly in reality. Sure, some films have scenes and dialog that, I think, try too hard but I think I'm one of those who tends to stay back a little. But that doesn't keep me from appreciating what the film and director are trying to convey. And I don't usually snigger outloud.

    Hmm. I  can't wait to look at that trailer, thanks for uploading it. BTW, did you read in Filmmaker about "Mumblecore?" It's a kind of next generation American indie scene which is all about sincerity and anti-irony and cynicism. It's totally indie, like completely ordinary people playing out scripts based on ordinary situations. I've only seen a few clips on youtube but it's sort of interesting (albeit a bit raw for anyone who is close to being a pro filmmaker). Inspiring, I think.
