No, this is not my writers' group....just A writer's group. Though the wine is not a half-bad idea...

I was so excited to attend my screenwriters' group last night, for the first time in over six months. Boo-yah to Jeremy for caring for the kids so I could go! Talking about movies really energized me. And that's not all we talked about...a new member, Sarah, brought a unique treat--a 60-second commercial script she did for her marketing firm. The product? Male enhancement.

And did we ever have a good time with that. We had a lively debate about marketing strategies for these types of products. A favorite: "What's up with the Cialis commercial, where the couple's in the twin outdoor bathtubs? I mean, who does that?!"

A grizzled middle-aged man with a wild beard--let's call him Bill--writes torture and gay-zombie movies, and he had an opinion. "If it were ONE bathtub, that would make sense!"

Well, we did help Sarah with her script, amid many laughs. Sarah's a recent transplant from China....I should totally get her to come over here to AnD.

It was great to be with other creative people again. And now that my employment situation is resolved, I can't wait to resume screenwriting. I love it so much.

I hope that male enhancement commercial is not another one of those Smiling Bob and his big Dick (as my hubby puts it) ads! Gah...

It's funny you should mention the twin bathtubs. I've never made any logical connection to that and the product but they always dump a man and woman into each one. Maybe us folks who can't afford a spa or hot tub are suppose to get twin bathtubs. I must have missed that memo.

If I wanna watch some flashy, formula films that don't resonate, I turn to the Hollywood stuff. This weekend I watched Burn After Reading and Mamma Mia. BAR was amusing, I must admit. MM, though I know most of the songs, didn't connect with me. It's not, like, Enchanted. ;p

I still haven't watched Oldboy (but I have seen Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). I think I am trying to steer clear of the violence. But I will change that for 2009. It's been on my netflix queue forever but always having other films preceding it. Will bump it up a little.

As Roger Fan pointed out, I'm the first person from Cincinnati repping on AnD. Word! I'm a writer, connected to the Asian-American community through my Korean-born husband, our two hapa sons, and my lifelong interest in Asian cultures.

My work has appeared in periodicals, advertising, and children's curriculum, and I do a lot of writing for the web, but my dream is a career in film. I'm working on getting my first screenplay into production, and I have more ideas in the works as well. Creating good roles for Asian-American actors is something that's really important to me. I feel fortunate to give exposure to talented Asians in film by writing movie reviews for their films.

I blog for NINGIN, the Asian Media Exchange website. There you'll find the latest news and views on a variety of Asian and Asian-American artists. My interviews with Sung Kang, Roger Fan, and other fabulous people are posted at http://elena.ningin.com. When my work appears online, I might post a link to it on my AnD blog so you can check it out. But this is to add to your AnD experience, not direct traffic away from here. There's no place like AnD! (I say, with red shoes tapping...). Besides, my work is copyrighted by the sites I contract with, so I'm just keeping it legal.
