  • Being an Artist

I think the simple definition of an artist is:

    A person who creates art.

    Seems simple right?

But how many of us have actually  been doing any  "creating" ?

How many have came up with something from your imagination or dared to do something that has never been done before?

How many  have spent the past X amount of years copying or plagiarizing what they've seen succeed in the past?

How many have repeated to do what's "safe" just so they don't have to face criticism from others?

As an artist, don't we have to take the risk of “creating” ?

    Yes!

Why spend your life walking in the footsteps of another when you can “create” a path of your own?

We should walk where no man has ever walked before...

And sometimes when you don't feel like walking...

Hop, skip, dance or do whatever your heart tells you to do.

    Become a true Artist =)

sometimes the best you can do is participate in the creation of art, even if its not 100% yours.  that's half way there at least. ;-)

I certainly understand what you are saying.  I think it is exhilarating when I come across art that is totally new, at least to me.  But I wonder how many, really, can create something new, and something that is also embraced in its own time?  I think very few can do this.  There are a few rare artists who, for whatever reason, step outside of the box that has defined art up until that moment, and do it in such a way that they can take some of us along with them.  Those are the revolutionaries and trailblazers.

But that is not most of us, and you can't become one of those iconoclasts just by wanting to be one.  Sometimes, I think the work of these individuals is a happy accident.  We all strive for it, but few actually attain it.  Also, sometimes only in hindsight do we recognize the groundbreaking works and add them to the canon of that art.

I think there is nothing wrong with being an artist who does your very best, tries to be true to yourself and your vision of art. That is all we can do, really.  It is up to others to see if what we do is worthy  celebrating as a significant work of art, or not (and not only now, but 20, 50, 100 years from now).  For every genius, I think there are 100 or 1,000 or even 1,000,000 others toiling in the trenches, making the best art that they can, but art that doesn't attain that transcendent moment.  Also, many artists have a singular work, or a short phase that is truly great, but the rest of their oeuvre functions rather like bookends, highlighting how extraordinary the works of that moment were.

I guess I am trying to say that the creative process is murky and mysterious, at best.  All we can do is blindly embrace what we feel compelled to create (maybe that defines artist in my book, someone who creates because they feel compelled to do so, they cannot rest until they embrace the struggle to produce something out of their own imagination and share it with an audience.
