  • My Homage to Female Artists

** oh damn, i was editing the blog and it got re-posted.  sorry **

i'm a strong believer that females are better artist than males because they are more emotionally complex.  to me guys are just too simple(minded).

this blog is my appreciation for female vocalists.

for me, a true test of a great singer is someone who can pull it off live.  especially an acoustic version of the song, where everything is stripped down, so the vocals are accentuated.  there are some singers that i am a big fan of, but have disappointed me when i heard them live.  for example, Beth Gibbons from Portishead and Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  they sound great on CD, but live? pretty nasty.

there is nothing more sexier in this world than a woman who can sing.  i would like to introduce you to 3 sexy ladies who i have been in love with for many many years.

first is Ann Wilson from Heart.  she is on the left and on the right is Nancy, her sister.

check out this video of a live acoustic version of 'Alone'.  i cried when i first saw this.  i'm not joking, i really did.

if you like what you heard you should checkout their 'the Road Home' album.  it's a live acoustic concert where they sing all their hits.  it will blow your pants off.

my second lover is Johnette Napolitano from the now defunct L.A band Concrete Blonde.

you might know the band for their hit single 'Joey'.

there is no video for the live acoustic version of 'Joey' that i want to share, so i put some text over the song and uploaded it to YouTube.  Johnette's voice is so amazing.  you can feel the pain through her voice.  and let me reiterate that this is live.

last but not least is the oh so cool Margot Timmins from Cowboy Junkies.

you might know them from their great cover (Levity - this is a rare example where the cover is better than the original) of 'Sweet Jane'.

here is a clip of her singing 'Misguided Angel' live.  her deep voice is so distinct.  check out how she rests her hands on top of each other.  so sexy

also, you should check out their version of 'Blue Moon' (actual title 'Blue Moon Revisited- a Song for Elvis') from 'the Trinity Session' album.  'Sweet Jane' is also on here.

when i heard 'Blue Moon' in high school, i made up my mind that this would be the song that i would propose to my future wife.  someday...

i would like to hear who you guys are "in love" with.

i'm off to Georgia again this Saturday to spend time with the wrestlers.  happy holidays everyone!

    sincerely,
    Jae-Ho

Wow very interesting perspective, I never thought about the emotional part of an artist and how a woman's touch can bring more heartfelt emotion to lyrics......Trust me you aren't the only one to of cried at the acoustic version of 'Alone'. Ann Wilson has pretty amazing vocals. Did you hear the 'All I Wanna Do' in the acoustic version, no as good as Alone, but still pretty nice.
Another classy singer that could bring emotion to her songs was Eva Cassidy.

I just had to read your blog and the memories that fell forth from remebering each of those three artist's songs brought tears to my eyes also.

great blog Jae Ho, female artists often don't get the props they deserve =)

You're so sweet, having picked out the song you are going to propose to - play the song, smile with your lovely dimples and I'm sure she will be putty in your hands.

Heart - so totally awesome.  Agree with Butter about Anne Wilson.   I love the sound of Johnettes voice, I've never heard of the band, I'm certainly going to look more into it.  Her voice reminds me of one of 'my loves' Chrissy Hines of the Pretenders.  Also from the 80s Pat Benatar and Chrissy Amphlet from the Divinyls (they had a string of hits in NZ and Aust, not just 'touch myself" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuLHHplYRHw).  I also love Pink.  Also Alanis Moresette and Tracey Chapman are worthy mentions.  I can't remember what all of these woman sound like live - hopefully great.
But my all time favourite "my love" female vocalist is Boh Runga, lead sing of Stellar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftw0JmXEl28&feature=related you can check out Violent too for a rock song and her other music on youtube if you want.  I also love her sister Bic Runga who is also an amazing singer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GMZa8ATurs&feature=related
( these girls are sisters and grew up in a very muscial family, their father is Maori and their mother is Chinese - I have blogged about them before)

Have a very Merry Christmas, I hope you have fun in Georgia, you seem to enjoy it there.  Have fun with the wrestlers and don't forget to keep us updated.

    awhi atu

PS I'm still waiting for my kisses ^_~

I think you are the only guy that I know of that will admit that the male species are simple minded.

You're a pretty evolved male to be able to admit this Jae-Ho.  Heart is fantastic.  I wish less was made about Ann Wilson's weight because that woman could sing.  Unfortunately the industry has always made image more of issue for female artists than actual talent.

Oh my goodness, Jae-Ho. This is right in line with some of our other discussions....you're gonna love this. My first solo performance was "Alone" at the summer camp talent show, a capella. I majored in voice in college, and have sung all my life...and I really enjoy Margot Timmons' sound too. Thank you so much for giving props to female artists!!! It takes both kinds to make the world go round.

I'm in love with the singing I hear almost everyday from my little friends who are near me. There's so much heart she puts into the Star Spangled Banner.

I too enjoy real singers with real voices and real talent.

dude, that is so totally odd... i just pulled up Sweet Jane as a drum reference for a song a friend is helping me with. It was the first time I'd listened to it in years and it was just two days ago! And not only that, I gave my friend "misguided angel" as a reference for the drum too, but it was the first time I'd ever heard it. How odd!!! Cool. Anyway, I completely agree with you about female vocalists and how impt it is to be good live. Wish my voice was as great as these ladies (: I have to say though, I love Karen O's voice. I love it live and recorded. She's not as perfectly in tune live as recorded, but I think her unique timbre and performance style make up for it so she's still the bomb!!!
