  • A small Act with a BIG Impact

I have this very interesting group of students supporting me, and I am grateful. They are students from the Secondary 2 level of Nanyang Girls' High School, one of the top secondary schools in Singapore.
Why so specific? Apparently their school made the entire secondary 2 level watch 'To Kill a Mockingbird' in February as the story book was their Literature study text this year. Somehow I was idolized (I think? Definitely not self-praising) by a couple of them and was later mass-added by the Nanyang Girls (And some other schools too) on facebook. I too thanked them on one of my blogpost during the Mockingbird campaign for the kind support.
Me with Etsuko(?) and Rachel, some of the students who approached to take pictures.
In fact, Dr. Liang Wern Fook, Writer of 'December Rains', happened to be the lecturer for one of the classes (or most of them?) and some of the students actually did came down to support December Rains as well!
Now to the main subject. Shinyee and a couple more of the students invited me to this event on Facebook titled 'Dramafest 2010'. Apparently its an inter-class Drama competition for their level. Since I had nothing much going on at the moment after coming back from HongKong, I've decided to drop by to say hi. And also to do a return favour for supporting me so much. Its time for me to show them some support too. And of course, I'd also like to see how good a middle school production can be.
It turn out to be a great night out for me. Totally unexpected. The performances put up by the 7 classes were top-notched. I was blown away (As what one of the judges Pat said) by the variety of genres I was watching. Its not really about the acting most of the time (since they are not professional actresses) but the story each of them are telling, how the scripts were formed individually etc.
All I can say is, I basically liked every single one of them for different reasons. One that really caught my attention was 'Idol Obsession', good example of showing how kids nowadays lost themselves for Idolization of pop stars. Another was Intertwined Illusions, which was obviously darker than I've expected, and carries a memorable slogan 'The thicker the yarn, the harder it is to break'...(I can still remember it omg). It was the winner of the night, well deserved. Burning Pomelos was pure entertainment. Simple no-brainer laughs for the audience. These girls are just so creative! And of course, Shika, a rather interesting piece with good music background (which later I come to realise that its original compositions) and the only production with detailed usage of Ensembles.
By the way, the lecturer/drama teacher who was hosting the event looked so much like Goh Boon Teck, director of Mockingbird and December Rains. I kept looking at him from the back-view thinking 'Oh Boonteck is here?'
I was pleasantly surprised by how 'popular' I am here. While searching for the auditorium, I was already getting weird stares from students around and finger-pointings + whisperings. And I thought I imagined it. It was later at the interval then I realised I'm a living target for photo-taking sessions. Thanks for the warmths you all gave me!
And I must mention this. Class 213 (Maker of Shika) did a great job. A picture with the Director Xuan Li. Well done. And class photos + me haha!
Last of all, I have to say it again, I totally enjoyed myself that evening and it was also a great learning experience for myself. And knowing that I am getting so much support from you girls keeps me moving. Thank you!
