Or is it just plain and simple plagiarism...? I recieve loads of eflyers about art exhibitions all over the place and this morning I got one for an exhibition at London's respected SPACE gallery for an exhibition entitled "MUMU - Malice and Misunderstanding" by Thomas Raat...

The featured piece of "work" (below) is credited to Raat, 2008.

And this (below) is the cover of the KLF's landmark electronic album "The White Room" from 1991. And of course as we all know, KLF used to call themselves The JAMS - Justified Ancients of MUMU.. Being obsessed with the mystical land and its people and frequently refering to it. They even did a rare concept album called "Waiting For the Rites of MU" complete with narration by Martin Sheen.... (Side note: Well worth a listen if you're in a dark mood)

The press release smugly admits that Raat is plaigarising deliberately - this is part of his "art" - because apparently it is "Reconstructing the dogmas that surround well known artworks and artists and highlighting the loss of Modernist ideals that has occurred"....

Sorry, but i just do not get the "art" world... Can anyone explain, or is it quite simply all a complete load of arse?

"Progress, so desperately desired, will always be a somewhat humorous and ridiculous cycle of misunderstanding."

Concerning art (and in many regards music), that phrase does actually make a lot of sense! Although I have no idea in what context the writer had it placed.

The first two sentences of that quotation were just a flashy way of saying "this guy is a bit pissed at life & cynical towards the future" ... duh ... he's a f**king artist! Name one artist who doesn't feel like that?! All the greats take a stab at modern ideals.

Drummond is a (reluctant to use the word but here it goes...) genius. Very much in tune with 'the way things are'. His bio "45" was a really entertaining read and his new music project is also based on an interesting point of view.

Great links Dan - you're right... the line is no longer just blurred, it's gone completely.. (probably right up the nose of the artwats who are responsible for all this..)

I was in the video to 3am eternal (the skinny bloke with massive high tops and shorts dancing like a twat in front of a psychedlic light...)

But yes, Dan, agreed... if anyone can pass off other people's work and be taken seriously as an artist, its the believers that are to blame not the artists... I'm sure Cauty and Drummond would approve of it all in their own subversive way.

Ah yes, the press agents - here's another choice excerpt from this one:

"In the disintegration of a utopian dream pessimism finds its voice. Malice lurks at the heart of every ideal. Progress, so desperately desired, will always be a somewhat humorous and ridiculous cycle of misunderstanding."

    Do what, mate?

I really think the London art scene has finally disappeared up it's own sphincter.

From this to Damien Hirst's "Stalin" and Martin Creed's "Work No. 850" ... well, I'm not criticising the artists by the way - more power to 'em - I'm completely baffled the idiots who lap this up without any question whatsoever.

And je$u$ do they all lap it up.

ha ha, i  don't know what all that stuff about dogmas is supposed to mean, but keep in mind that KLF stood for 'Kopyright Liberation Front', so maybe copying from them is in some ways an homage...  ;-)

actually i think reinterpretations of famous works as a tribute is fine,  as long as you're not just stealing and pretending its your own original item...
