  • Bye-bye NIN

    2009-02-19 3:52AM / 會員可以看

I'm only copy & pasting this as NIN have a habit of removing posts from their web-site, never to be seen again:

"Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.

Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Are there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

    Trent"

Early January, a trapped nerve in the neck ignited an ache over half my head resulting in no sleep for 10 days ... the fatigue was kind of fun but degraded quality of life somewhat, and the whole thing really hammered into my seasonal depression. Drugs fixed all, thankfully, and there are no lingering issues from that little adventure. Just a slightly better insight into the realm of insanity.

No sooner had I recovered from the neck, a lower back muscle infection started rabbit-punching the hell out of my nerves. Straight into two weeks of good old fashion P...A...I...N. Never felt anything like it. Random attack, relentless agony and rendered completely unable to function. Drugs did not work, so (before ripping my spine out with kitchen implements) I was wheeled into St Paul's operating theatre on Valentine's Day. Checked out Sunday night. Feeling considerably better now, but there's massive angry hole where the Gremlins used to party so lots of antibiotics and the slightly evil Tramadol for the foreseeable.

No cigars or alcohol for weeks. Many weeks. Past, present or future. Actually, the lack of alcohol has been pleasant but the cigars are sorely missed. That's my biggest annoyance. At least the painkillers afford me some minor amusement if you take the entire daily dose at breakfast.

It's almost possible to function normally now, so I returned to work at the studio today. Canto-pop never sounded so good. On Ultracet. Anyway – the point of this post: – there are a billion people out in the World suffering a billion worse agonies, so all in all my problems amount to, well ... fuck all. Just wanted to explain the absence.

Blog to resume normal service very soon. Positive points of note: Got my MS20 under control from Logic and having fun with that, wrote two tech-house songs and have begun a third, completed Fallout 3 (once good, once evil), received a big fat cheque for the film / TV music cues I completed over Xmas, didn't die, didn't kill anyone.

    A good year so far.
  • MOTU Volta

    2009-02-04 3:31PM / 會員可以看

*** warning! übergeek blog post! •••

Having picked up some vintage analog synths lately, and with the full intention of buying more ... I was super stoked to have been shown this new product: MOTU Volta, a forthcoming DAW AU plug-in that sends CV output through any MOTU  (and eventually any DC-coupled) sound card. AAWWWEEESSSOOOMMMEEE!

Now I can use my lovely old MS20 on stage. Now I can approach any vintage synth hardware as I would any plug-in ... no oscillator drift, calibration, timing issues, re-bouncing or any of the other headaches which prevented me from forming a massive modular habit.

Told you this was a geek post. One of my main loves for hardware is that it puts you one huge  sonic step above the army of pirates all using the same bloody cracked software.

The intro video below is short but quite possibly the least interesting studio equipment product video I have ever seen. It's that's dull. But if you sequence in a DAW (and who doesn't?) plus own any CV gear ... take 3 minutes to check it out.

Anything which helps kill off MIDI synth control is a good thing.

p.s: As the economy has knocked the legs right out from under my studio - and aside from mucking about with synths for no good reason - I'm playing Xbox a lot recently. A LOT ... Add gamer tag "disuye" if you are looking for L4D team-mates, an easy kill in CoD4/WW/Halo3 ... am a potential GoW2 Horder plus happy to rambling on about where cool shit spawns in Fallout 3. I may blog Fallout sometime soon... the game is that good.
  • tonight - C.N.Y. costume party

Out goes the rat and in comes the bull, or ox, or cow ... depending on your view. In celebration of another lunar new year, our fancy dress event is TONIGHT so if you've characteristically left things to the last minute you still have a few hours to sort out something which will win that weekend holiday first prize that is up for grabs.

DJs include pretty much all of our resident roster, so no introduction necessary.

Flyers below with most of the info. If you have really dropped the ball and not sorted a costume out - no worries - everyone is welcome fancy dress or not.

Everyone's at it ... hot on the heels of my previous post: NI has introduced an MPC styled controller for their own [new] software: Maschine.
