  • Experiencing A Musical Revival

I believe I may have actually written my very first song today!

    How EXCITING!

    What a RUSH!!!

I have never written a song in my life before, even though I've always played music, enjoyed singing and listening to songs... but this morning was something special, something different... I've read dozens of times about professional song-writers who just compose songs within minutes... like George Michael who apparently wrote "Careless Whisper" while he was riding the bus... and David Tao, who said that "Dear God" was a song that came to him while he was playing the guitar, and it was like a gift from up above... and I've always thought to myself, "Gosh, those people must have talent overflowing in their veins, and inspiration on tap, to be able to just write songs within minutes!"

I've never been able to write a song... there was a time in my teenage life, when I did TRY to make myself sit down and VERY DELIBERATELY make an attempt to get myself to write a song... but you know what, it just didn't come to me, so I stopped trying to force myself to write something... and gosh, I never thought that it would ever happen to me... but today, it happened! And the evidence is in my colourful little Paperchase notebook! Woah!

Lately, I've been experiencing a sort of musical revival in my life. I guess this phase probably started when I got involved with the Alpha Course at The Catholic Centre on Waterloo Street in Singapore. There was no one to play the music every week, so I got roped in for that. It was not a great contribution on my part, nor did I make any great efforts to make it all that fantastic for everyone. Actually, I was pretty cold and practical about it. OK, 2 to 3 songs a week, 1 to 2 hours of practice, and 2 or 3 times running thru the songs with the singers, and that's it. Come to think of it, I don't think I even completed all the weeks required.

Then I went to this Alpha Conference earlier this year, and one of the seminars conducted in conjunction with the conference was for Worship Leaders... I decided to go for that, since it involved music and kinda looked kinda interesting, more so than any of the others... and no, it wasn't like I got struck by lightning or anything like that... but I did sense a soft calling towards music, I just wasn't sure if it was my imagination, or if it might be for real... and even if it is for real, I really didn't picture myself going into Worship music or Gospel music, 'cos really, I am not that religious.

Still, I have been noticing that my interest and passion for music and singing is really starting to grow and grow this year... and I don't know if this is a sign, but just a couple of nights ago, I was watching TV with my Mom, and out of the blue, she turned to me and asked, "Do you ever regret giving up your music?" and I told her softly, "Yeah."

But deep inside, my answer was more like... (SHOUT OUT LOUD) "HELL YEAH, ARE YOU KIDDING ME OR WHAT?!??"

I miss it... like the flowers miss the rain!

Hey, wait a minute... isn't that a lyric to some song out there? hehe!

In any case, I got some lyrics in my notebook now, and a tune in my head... all I need is a keyboard to figure out the notes for my tune, and a pen and some music paper (someone remind me what those lined sheets of paper used to write musical notes on are "officially" called again??), so I can write my first musical score in... oh gosh, a heckuva long time!

It looks like I'm really gonna HAVE to come back to music now!

Hmmm, I guess it's time to check out some music lessons, and to get myself back on track... back to the future... back to my music!
