In his blog today, Terry Tye Lee mentioned an article that appeared in "The Straits Times" broadsheet newspaper, 2 Dec 2008 issue, on page C8 of the "Life! Section".

For those of you who are unable to get your paws on this Singaporean newspaper, here's what the article says...

    SINGER SUES RECORDING FIRM

Alicia Pan claims her album was not released because she refused to sign a new contract. (By K. C. Vijayan, Law Correspondent)

The songs have been ready for over a year, but the album is still not released.

A Singapore-born rising popstar in Taiwan, Alicia Pan, is now suing her recording firm here for failing to release her new solo album.

Pan, who has featured in CDs with Taiwanese stars A*mei, Jacky Cheung and eVonne Hsu and appeared in local hit sitcom Phua Chu Kang, claims the firm has not released the album because she declined to sign a new contract.

Singapore-based firm Chynahouse Group is denying her allegations and, among other things, counters that it was actually a Taiwanese firm Music Nation Wingman which had exclusive rights to manage her career.

Chynahouse is involved in artiste management, recording and the production of music records and signed an initial deal with Pan in 2005. A supplementary agreement was signed by both with Wingman.

Pan, who turned 24 last month and is known for her good looks and powerful voice, has performed in both Taiwan and Singapore under Wingman.

The singer-songwriter moved to Taiwan in 2005 and was one of three artistes handpicked to be part of the music video for Breaking Free, a hit song popularised by Disney Channel's hit movie High School Musical.

Pan claims Chynahouse told her in January last year of plans to release an album of her songs.

Recordings began the following month and she scaled back her appearances and live performances, which led to a drop in income, in order to devote more time to this, she claimed in court documents.

Half of the 10 songs for the proposed album were co-written by  her and music producer Terence Leong, who represented Chynahouse.

The songs were recorded multiple times at the request of Chynahouse.

Both Wingman and Chynahouse were involved in the production of the new album, and by May last year, the recordings were done. After the mixing, all that remained was for the album to be packaged and released.

Between January and April last year, she publicised her new album by telling audiences about it and performing songs from it.

Since then, she has received numerous messages on her website and online forums from the public asking why her new album has not been released.

She claims her refusal to sign a new agreement offered by Chynahouse in July last year was factored into the non-release of her album.

Her last paid performance was in October last year and Chynahouse had "completely stopped" contacting her.

Through Senior Counsel Hri Kumar and lawyer James Low from Drew & Napier, Pan is claiming for loss and damages suffered including her reputation as result of failure to release her album after the publicity on its release.

Although no amount was stated, the matter is before the High Court, which deals with claims above $250,000 (Jean: I assume this is in Singapore dollars).

Thanx JJ. For TTL's sake, I pray this sorts itself out  quickly and painlessly. Time for all us AnD siblings to gather round our bro and lend our support.
